notes

"The Hornheads have the most perfect, stanky funk, tight-ass horn section ever!"
-Ricky Peterson - producer, singer/songwriter, keyboardist

Since recording "5 Heads Are Better Than 1" (1997), we've kept very busy performing and working on over 100 CD projects with many talented musicians. Fortunately, we found enough time to make another Hornheads CD. We probably spent as much time joking and laughing during the recording sessions as we did playing. "Fat Lip" represents the pure energy and spirit of the Hornheads.
-MBN

This group of extraordinarily talented horn players has been gathering international acclaim from artists and critics alike, since 1991. Top session players all, members of the Hornheads have performed and/or recorded with artists such as Prince, Janet Jackson, Rod Stewart, Babyface, James Brown, Jimmy Jam, Aretha Franklin, Pedro Abrunhosa, Louie Bellson, Lenny Kravitz, Ray Charles, Maceo Parker, Sammy Davis Jr., Clark Terry , Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, Doc Severinsen, and many others.

While members of Prince and the NPG (1991-2000), the Hornheads recorded on more than 20 CDs and performed for over 2 million concert goers in 20 countries. Q Magazine, London, described them as a "peerless horn section...playing in bare brilliant syncopation, punching with staccato precision beyond science or synclavier. Prince splashes their insouciant versatility all over the set list."

  • sexy saxes!!!!
    author: Anitra

I love the Hornheads! I especially love this cd. Kenni Holmes has such a sexy, sultry sax sound. I recommend this disc to anyone interested in Hot, NOW music. The Stevie Wonder medley and West Side Story medley are so kickin' and funky and original. I would say that EVERYONE should buy this album if you only buy one of their three (that I'm aware of.)

  • wonderful

great blend of sounds, precision of attacks is awesome, and the great use of styles makes this cd great!

  • awesome horns and arrangements
    author: doc

This was my first opportunity to hear Hornheads. You people absolutely kick butt with your ability to play and the arrangements were great. I'm taking this CD to the local band teachers so they can play it for their students for some powerful inspiration to GET GOOD. CD Baby is a good outlet to sell your CD from.

  • I Think I Need a Cigarette
    author: Jessica

I'll skip the technical details and just say that Fat Lip is a deliciously funky album that reaches right out through the speakers and does goooooood things to me. Yeah, baby, yeah!

  • Excellent arrangements
    author: Paolo

This horn section is great. The arrangement of the songs is superb!

  • Tight! Tight! Tighter!
    author: Jim Meckley

Man, this group is so tight! As a high school teacher and jazz ensemble director, I played this for my kids and they were awestruck. What an incredible inspiration! The musicianship, creativity and ensemble work are beyond words. I bought all three CD's and they are with me constantly. Next speeding ticket is the fault of Hornheads - worth it though!

  • EXCELLENT!!! Fresh!!! Creative!!! Oozing talent and skill!
    author: Nick Drozdoff

These folks are so talented, words fail me. This is a totally unique group. They are fresh. What they are doing requires immense talent and mastery of the insturments, and they demonstrate that handsomely. This CD in particular has some of the most imaginative arrangements of pop tunes and originals I've ever heard. My hat is off to this group. BUY THIS CD! Just do it! Don't think about. Don't discuss it. Just BUY it! Nick Drozdoff Trumpet/Flugelhorn/Bass-trumet

  • Tight Is Good For So Many Things, You Know?

Still together, still generating amazing music at an amazing energy and skill level. Hornheads is easily Minnesota's most underrated resource. The Minnesota Legislature should be building THEM a stadium!

  • Talk about Music and Sex combined
    author: Robert

This is what I call baby-making music to its fullest...

  • Great sound, tight arrangements, could use one rythym track
    author: Jimmy Lowe

I'm a drummer and was astounded how great the music was without any rythym instruments. Wonder if the group has ever considered adding a track or two with drums?

  • Incredible and Addictive!!
    author: Heidi Sue

I heard excerpts of this CD on my local jazz station and had to call them to get more information so I could get my own copy! I anxiously awaited its arrival, and have played the snot out of the damn thing since I tore the wrapper off of it! Every track is top notch, although my favorite by far is the title track...it is positively addictive! I have told anyone who will listen about the "awesome-ness" of this CD, and I will definitely be purchasing their previous releases!

  • these guys are the shizzle!
    author: Brad

Saw HornHeads at the local jazz fesitval this summer and was totally blown away - had to get the CD. Needless to say, it delivers the same mindblowing arrangements as the live show. The Stevie Wonder medley delivered the ooohs and aaahhs live the same way it does on the CD. What you are witnessing here are five masters of their own instruments, melded together through obvious countless hours of practice together. Intonation is absolutely FABULOUS. These guys have HUGE ears - every one of them. REQUIRED listening for anyone serious about playing or enjoying. Don't miss this group - they NEED a label deal to get them out and get more exposure.

  • Great sound, thanks
    author: Lisa

Such a great discovery! My husband played with Kenni for a summer with the Minnetonka Jazz Band and remembers his sound well. We would love to hear them live.

  • WOW!
    author: pooder

I guess the only thing better than this CD would be Hornheads live . . . .

  • BRILLIANT !!!

    BRILLIANT !!! SUPERB !!! FANTASTIC !!!

  • Talk about energy!
    author: Jon in St Paul

I have another CD of the Hornheads and have seen them perform - this recording proves how tight and talented they are. Great variety of music and original writing, wonderful!

  • Imaginative writing, clean ensemble playing, soaring solos! What else would you
    author: Ivan Whillock

I first heard the Hornheads at a TC Jazz Society event a number of years ago. They awed me with their amazing acapella playing, and I have been a fan ever since. Their CD, Fat Lip, takes me back to that great discovery and only increases my crush on Kathy whose playing soars through the stratosphere--while she's standing on one leg! And, yes, the guys are OK, too.

  • Fabulous sound and arrangements
    author: Steve

My first exposure to the Hornheads and am wondering why it took me so long to find these people! This CD demonstrates the committment and energy needed to pull off a performance like this. Time to buy other Hornhead releases...I'm sold.

  • A Minnesota Treasure
    author: Sista Daneesha

In Minnesota we have the Mayo Clinic, the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness, Jessie "The Body" Ventura... and The Hornheads! If you don't love Fat Lip you're a Fat Head! There now. Sista Daneesha, sax player and Hornhead wannabe.

  • Intonation, ensemble, solos and arranging are simply great !!!
    author: Cliff Stark

A friend of mine played this for me and I was hooked! All the previous reviews have said all I could say, but I would like to say that CDBaby's service, with a little hip humor accompanying my order, is very much appreciated, and their service is the best that I have encountered from any online music company. Thanks everyone.

  • I was blown away!
    author: Liz Woodworth

This is one of the most innovative and creative CD's I have heard in years. Three minutes into it, and you forget it is only horns. There is no need for a rhythm section with these guys. I will be purchasing other CD's from this group. Excellent and fabulous.

  • The Hornheads are back with all their talent and souls. The album is awesome.
    author: Laura from Rome

The Hornheads are back and they're cool! I enjoyed every single note off "Fat lip". The sound is thick and pleasant. Music just for horns is not necessarily easy to listen to, but the variety inside the cd is big and you get curios while you're listening. I really liked the two medleys: the Hornheads managed to fuse all the different songs in one whole that keeps your attention alive to see how they are going to merge everything.

  • Excellent
    author: Iris Nelson Saari

I enjoy the music and arrangments. The horns were all outstanding. I would recommend it to any one and especially people who enjoy horn instruments.

  • Crazy good!
    author: Pete

Another outstanding recording from the Hornheads! I heard the Stevie Wonder medley and the West Side Story medley live about 5 years ago - unbelieveable. It's amazing how much sound variation they get from just 5 players. Crazy good!

  • Excellent!
    author: JP Travis

This is a great CD. Having played in a small group setting, I really appreciate what it takes to make so much sound with so few instruments. I only got through 2 tracks before I was e-mailing fellow musicians about this hot CD. A must have for any jazz fan.

  • At long last new Hornheads!
    author: Jeff Waggoner

I've been hoping a new CD was in the works from the Hornheads, and it doesn't disappoint! A wider range of musical styles this time, all with the impeccable playing of this quintet of outstanding players.

  • Awesome
    author: Tony
