Album Notes

Comin' Home was the first song I ever wrote that wasn't jazz. To record it I needed to find a vocalist as well as expand my recording facilities. That was a major transition for me--I went from literally recording in a closet to utilizing the entire upper floor of our house in a short space of time. As the studio grew, more songs were written, and I shifted my focus away from Comin' Home. Finally, several years later, I turned my attention back to this and other songs I'd written but never successfully recorded. I was in a music store one afternoon, and mentioned to the proprietor that I needed to find a female singer with a low voice. A young woman looking at sheet music began to smile, and I was soon introduced to her. She was Emily Walter, who I knew by reputation already. Emily was the ideal singer for this challenging material. Her experience and musicianship contributed greatly to the artistic success of this album. She not only sang but did the vocal arrangements on Infinity, Comin' Home, and Sometimes. We were joined in this project by my father, Frank, who composed the music to Rainbows and played the vibraphone solo on Just A Girl, and Joani Redler, who sang harmony vocals on Just A Girl and Rainbows. We hope you enjoy this music -- Paul Hosford About Paul... Paul Hosford and his wife, Lori, own and operate their own record label, Painted Heart Music, LLC, which has released 10 full-length CDs and one CD single (as of March 2003). The Hosfords have operated a small recording studio (in which Comin' Home was recorded) for 16 years, utilizing vacuum tube equipment designed and built by Paul. Hosford plays a number of instruments besides those featured on Emergence, and has composed over 50 musical works. In addition to operating their studio, Hosford performs, teaches guitar, demonstrates stringed instruments in area schools, and tunes pianos. Hosford's primary musical influence has been his father, jazz pianist and composer Frank Hosford, but he has been influenced by many other musicians on many instruments. His main focus has long been on composing and recording his own music (he made his first multi-instrumental recording at age 12), but he has performed in a number of settings. The Hosfords invite you to visit their website (www.paintedheartmusic.com) to hear music from their other albums and learn more about their musical undertakings. About Emily... Soulful and compelling music!
author: Jonathan Baker
I first learned of Comin Home from a friend who had recommended another album of Paul Hosford's, called River of January. I have thoroughly enjoyed both albums, and was delighted by what I heard. Comin Home has a style that is both imaginative and wonderfully innovative. Emily Walter sings with a soulful quality that is not always easy to find in the music of today. The instrumentation and compositions are unique and compelling. This album was a real find!
