Album Notes

About James: James Hoskins enjoys playing many types of instruments including 'cello, gadulka, drum set, percussion, folk oboes (zurna), saz, piano, and singing. Prior to moving to Boulder in 1991, James and his wife lived in Hollywood, California where he worked in a variety of bands, studios, and other areas of the entertainment industry. James now accompanies dance classes at the University of Colorado and composes music for modern dance performances. He plays in the Boulder/Denver area in in the Balkan/Middle-Eastern musical groups Sherefe and Barbelfish. He plays Japanese folk-inspired music with Akemi Iwase, and jazz with County Road X. James and Timothy Quigley have a CD of didjeridoo and 'cello duets, "Solar Mirror".

James and his ensembles are available for concerts, dances, weddings and other events. James also accepts adult students of improvisational 'cello in the Boulder CO area. Please contact him at James@CelloHoskins.com or phone 303-939-8702.

About Solo Cello Improvisations: Tracks 1, 4, 5, 7 recorded by Dave Willey in June, 2006 in Four Mile canyon, Boulder, CO, on a Howard Needham 2004 cello.

Tracks 2, 3, 6, 8 recorded by Jesse Manno in “The Tank”-- a 75 ft. tall x 30 ft. diameter empty water tank in northwest Colorado 2004 (courtesy of Michael Stanwood and the “Order of the Tank”) on a Knilling “Portacello”, which was the only cello that would fit through the ~18” diameter portal into the Tank. What you hear is a result of the natural sound characteristics of the chamber; there is no added reverb to those tracks.

Mixed, mastered and produced by Dave Willey and James Hoskins. Copyright 2006.

REVIEWS

the glint of light on breath

James Hoskins is one of those rare accomplished musicians that seems to honor the space between his luscious instrumentals as much as those luscious instrumentals, which themselves seem to come from a deeply inspired source. I've listened to his Solo Cello Improvisations again and again and have never tired of his mastery and the tension he holds it within. I found The Tank sessions especially moving. You'll find in this collection a strong intertwining of atmosphere and technique, of seaside jazz openness and old world earthiness, of brooding passion and sunlit delight. I have seldom been so captivated by a solo string instrumental album and would recommend it to music lovers of all types. You'll be glad to have this gem in your collection. ~ Heather M. Philipp
