A great CD

This cd collects most of Hovhaness' known works for viola and violin. Some have been recorded before but many have not. The recording is vibrant, the performances excellent - sympathetic and assured. Anyone who likes Hovhaness's larger scale works will easily recognise the work of the master here, and find much to enjoy. Any lister unfamiliar with Hovhaness but who likes the intimacy of chamber music for violin and viola will surely enjoy this disc. I bought my copy years ago and still frequently play it - there's always something new to enjoy. The packaging is attractive too.

A mesmerizing contemporary classical CD evoking delicate passion with contemplat

A truly profound CD with a grip that will leave you breathless. Hovhaness summons a tragically sweet reality, evoking exotic Eastern images through his exquisite passion. These Eastern elements range from a suggestive harmonic palette to specific performance notes, such as in Saris, where the pianist is instructed to play without changing the pedal in imitation of the Saz, a long-necked lute found in Turkey. The emotional heart of this music is deep and impenetrable, yet clutches the listener with its stark simplicity. This CD encompasses Hovhaness' published output for accompanied violin and unaccompanied violin and viola, possible by a superb performance from Christina Fonghi.
