Howlin’ Alan is singer/songwriter artist who doesn’t abide by musical boundaries. Thus, he has created a new musical genre he calls, “Country Rock Americana Pop (acronym not indicative)”…. This special blend also has a nice blues flavoring added.
Several years ago, it was the full intent of Howlin’ Alan to write and record his own music. Raised on rock, but with appreciation of all musical genres, his songwriting past is full of great material written on his own and with several co-writers, including “In the Shade of the Family Tree” recorded by an unbelievable A-List of Country Music and Grand Ole Opry artists over a decade ago for the book, “Chicken Soup for the Country Soul”. But, finally, the time was just right and the title appropriate for recording the album, “Back to Plan A”, thereby making his dreams become reality.
With songs that wake your emotions, like “One Man’s Misery” (which will make your hair stand on end or you’re dead) and “Live Your Life” (a much needed and meaningful message for many) as well as those that rock you. Such as the kicking kickoff number, “Pretty on the Outside” (a four minute audio movie) or “Tom Petty (& the Highway)”, about a songster’s inadvertent detour on his trip to Nashville. The song lyrics contain seventeen Tom Petty song titles and references. Diehard TP fans can find 'em all.
The rollicking mandolin licks and smooth harmonica on "Someday Somebody", an optimistic anthem for those without a love in their life, simply make you feel good! Then, there’s the relaxed, lazy feel of “Never Fall In” … An easy to love, love song with those Hammond B-3 organ sounds.
The mysterious and bluesy, “She Was There” is one of the most powerful tracks on this record. A man’s life is turned inside out in the aftermath of a casual encounter.
“Everything” is simply a beautiful song!! Introspective, searching and finding what is really important in life. The acoustic guitar licks put it over the top, not to mention the organ-sounding harmonica. “Everything” matters!
Followed by “Not for Her”, which many a man can relate to. Finding what you thought was love, only to find it was “untrue” and having to live with it… or without it.
The album’s final track is truly magnificent! “Which Side of the Road” offers up some very smoooooth tremolo guitar, B-3 organ and meaningful lyrics …. WOW! Sweet ear candy!
As positive reviews continue to pour in for this "FRESH and ORIGINAL" record, it’s worth noting that Howlin’ Alan wrote all of the songs himself and is responsible for all guitars, mandolins, harmonicas and vocals on the record. Word has it, he is already headed back to the studio for another record before touring. That is good news!
“Back to Plan A” is truly a delight to my ears, mind, body and spirit. A new favorite that no great record collection should be without. Keep your eyes and ears on this Indie artist.
