notes

It is with pleasure that we announce the release of a new CD by Dennis Hunt. "Polyhymnia Smiles" is Dennis Hunts' first solo release. Dennis has performed on many projects in the past as a musician, singer, soloist and writer. He has also performed with many artists such as; Mantle, Montana Mandolin Society, Tom Prasada-Rao and Robin Roys. It is significant that although Dennis is a prolific song-writer he chose to record, for this release, twelve beloved old hymns in a unique and meaningful variety of styles.

From the liner notes..

Polyhymnia the ancient Greek muse of sacred poetry, has always been seen with a holy frown on her face and her finger to her lips, as if restraining any joy or pleasure from the writer that may come under her inspiration. Has the sacred poetry of common hymn's fallen under her spell? Some may think so. It seems that when we hear the word "hymn" in these times of extreme audio stimulation our minds conjure up a picture of uninspired group singing that's obligational at best. "Polyhymnia Smiles" is an attempt to put meaning and passion back into the old hymns that many know so well.

Dennis says; "These hymns, all written from the 1860's to the 1890's, have introduced themselves to me little by little over the last 20 years or so. I knew them well long before then, or so I thought. I met them more intimately sitting down with a guitar in time of great need and realizing the power and deep personal meaning of their words. I started thinking about them more as sacred poetry in the delivery of a thoughtful singer song-writer. My greatest wish is that you will realize the power and relevance of this sacred poetry as if you heard it for the first time. I pray that a few new frames will make these old poetic pictures shine forth in an illuminating, more relevant and affirming light.

  • Amazingly Smooth Mix
    author: Steve Goad

A strong mountain music feel, mixed with a bit of blues, brings some of the great hymns to life. Certainly Leaning on the Everlasting Arms highlights this collection, but all are fantastic. The nearly Native American feel of Imortal Love, and the Blues meets bluegrass feel of Take the World are also stand-outs. Already my favorite CD purchase of 2008!

  • Fresh, thoughtful arrangements bring new life to great old Hymns.
    author: Glenn Dalby

This is an inspiring CD. I found myself hearing the melodies and lyrics as if they were brand new. The fresh, understated acoustic settings are very different than the plodding renditions we usually hear. If your tired of sacred music that's canned, cookie-cutter pop, try Polyhymnia Smiles. You'll be refreshed.
