Michael Hutchinson a.k.a Hutchy is the founder and label head of Ruff Cut Records. Hutchy was born in St. Andrews, Jamaica and raised in Mandeville. He move to Washington D.C. with his family in the 1980's and became a renowned dj, selector and promoter on the DC music scene. He says, "Ever since I can remember I have been doing music. One of my first stage experiences was at my high school, doing a rendition of Stevie Wonder's song 'Master Blaster Jamming.' When I finished my act, I was rewarded with a standing ovation. At that point I knew I belonged on stage.
"My experience on stage didn't end there. I met Carl Malcolm who let me perform on his show. The audience's reaction to me was overwhelming. I was now convinced that I had a musical talent and a way to connect with my audience."
"Earlier on, I had also gained some studio experience by observing 'Scientist' and 'Phillip Smart' both of whom I admired. I then bought drum machine and started experimenting with making beats. Though I was never one to frequent any studio, my experiences with producers defined who I am today.
"I work in a variety of styles and plan to have Ruff cut reflect this. Therefore, this label is not just relegated to reggae, but to many different types of music. A good example is dance music with which originates from dub. I have worked with diverse bands and individuals such as Desmond Williams, Thievery Corporation, BT, Thunder ball and Deep Dish. My singing style is unique and involves a score of different styles."
"Because I saw the need to have creative control over my work, I knew I had to have my own studio and do my own thing as a writer and producer. That's how Ruff Cut got started."
