The artist Huw M (aka Huw Meredydd Roberts) is releasing his first solo album, Os Mewn Sŵn (translated as ‘If in Noise’), which is a wonderfully weird mixture of original melodies, a few borrowed Welsh folk songs, mangled together with influences from France and Brazil, all conveyed in his Welsh mother tongue, to create ‘small pop’ that’s been described as music of ‘great, great loveliness’ that ‘tugs you on the arm until you can resist no longer.’
Huw M began to perform in gigs as a ‘one person band’ in Wales (UK) before releasing his first single as a joint venture with artist Llwyd in July 2008. The single was released to great acclaim and was broadcast on a number of radio stations including BBC 6 Music on Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone, who described the song as a “stunningly beautiful piece of music”.
The single release was promptly followed by live performances across Wales, and Huw and Llwyd recorded a second single which was launched in the SŴN festival in Cardiff in November 2008. Shortly after, Huw started to record his first solo album.
The album Os Mewn Sŵn was recorded in a 4 month period during the winter of 2008-9 with the brilliant producer Frank Naughton (of Rocket Goldstar). The recording includes the work of Lucello (Lucy O’Connor) on the cello, Frank Naughton on drums (and various other instruments), and Bethan Reynolds on vocals and clog dancing. The artwork is provided by the wonderful !!Arth!!
