Hundred Year Flood's album, Cavalier, is their second album recorded under the Frogville Records label. John Treadwell, president of Frogville, has an ability to find, feed, nurture and love the very best of the best in his part of the world. This band and this album is nothing less than that.
Felicia Ford's voice is mesmerizing and something that every singer can learn from. Bill Palmer's voice and exceptional guitar work, echoes through my brain almost everyday. Kendra Lauman's creative bass work is the glue that keeps the butter churning and Jim Palmer's phenomenal and sensitive drumming is so under appreciated it hurts.
Cavaliers first track "Come On" is a song that I have literally dared people not to like. It is a song that takes a basic pop arrangement and stretches, twists and wrings every drop of goodness out of it. In my book it is impossible to not fall in love with this album after the first notes make contact with your eardrums. The wide scope and crossing over of genre's, make this album a "sure thing" for anyone who likes straight up rock and roll, Southern Fried Deep Soul, keepin' it real, down & dirty love making and well….. It’s for anyone who just likes really good music.
Typically HYF reviews have the word “hillbilly” in them. I would like to challenge that notion, assuming that you agree that the word Hillbilly implies ignorance and backwards awareness issues, and say that their music is intelligent, politically aware, poignant, sensitive, creative and hip. If you were to base your opinion of their music on instrumentation, guitar tone and rhythm, then yes; you could say “hillbilly”, but then you would be the ignorant one. Dig deeper into this album and you will find every single ingredient required for great and powerful music. Do yourself a favor and spend your money on this CD, you will never regret it.
