Hypnogaja, Hollywood based quartet, displays an interesting mix of classical and modern rock music. Their songs are moody and their compelling style of music offers a porthole into their lyrics, which explores the many facets of faltering relationships. Hypnogaja’s new CD, “Acoustic Sunset – Live at the Longhouse” on Union State/Longhouse Records, was produced by legendary singer/songwriter Wendy Waldman (Fishin In the Dark, Save the Best for Last) and recorded and mixed by veteran engineer Michael Boshears (Black Flag, Onigo Boingo).
“Acoustic Sunset,” contains 12 stripped down performances recorded live in Encino, California, plus a brand new studio track, “I’m Not One of You.” The band is comprised of Jason Arnold (Shyboy) vocals, Mark Nubar Donikian, piano, keyboards, Jeeve, guitar, bass, Tim Groeschel, guitar, bass, Adrian Barnardo, drums and percussion.
The songs while somewhat melancholy have interesting textures and haunting melodies. The band invites you into their arena with accessible lyrics and daring arrangements.
“Misery,” the first track sounds like a lullaby (not to be confused with their song “Lullaby”), which explores the pain in a relationship where one partner is feeling miserable and can’t stand the sight of the other one.
Hypnogaja does a searing rendition of the Eurythmics “Here Comes the Rain Again,” reminiscent of Marilyn Manson’s take on a Eurythmic song. The tune is a fine example of their modern rocks roots. It’s very engaging and draws you into their realm.
“Looking Glass,” uses the analogy of Alice In Wonderland giving you the feeling that you yourself have fallen into the rabbit hole. It makes reference to the Cheshire cat and the Mad Hatter as well as Alice herself. It’s a fun track and appealing lyrically.
“They Don’t Care,” delves into the situation where people say things that are hurtful but they just don’t care if they hurt your feelings. The song has nice guitar rhythms.
“I’m Not One of You,” explores the notion of a couple that no longer see eye to eye with each other. It is beautiful musically and the guitars are interesting. This song reveals the sensitive side to their music.
“Outside Looking In,” begins with a delightful piano intro which again looks at a failing relationship that seems to be a common thread throughout this disc. The song has lovely vocals.
Hypnogaja takes their name from the hazy-dreamlike state wakefulness and sleep known in psychological circles as hypnagogia. Their music too has a dreamy quality to their songs with memorable melodies and intense lyrics. The band displays both modern hard rock with sweet acoustic melodies.
