The third album released by the band, CLEAR expanded their musical range, resulting in the hit single 1984 despite difficult times for the band leading to their break-up in 1971. It remains as a final testament to the original band's lineup -- and a portent of the new music to come.
"The Doors were all right -- but for many rock fans in the late 60s, the band that really mattered was Spirit". This quote by Jim Washburn of the LA Times voices the opinion of classic rock fans the world over. Spirit, the legendary California group featuring Randy California, First broke on the scene with their incredible first album featuring a remarkable assortment of jazz, rock and blues. Over the years the band continued to perform in various arrangements until Randy California's death in 1997. The band retains a loyal following and new releases have made Spirit more popular than ever.

"The Doors were all right - but for many rock fans in the late 60s, the band that really mattered was Spirit". This quote by Jim Washburn, Los Angeles Times is the common opinion of classic rock fans the world over. Strongly influenced by Jimi Hendrix, the legendary California group first broke on the scene with a ground-breaking first album released in 1968, featuring a trademark mix of jazz, blues and rock forays. Over the years the band continued to perform in various arrangements until Randy California's death in 1997. The band retains a loyal following and new releases have made Spirit more popular than ever.
One of the first bands to typify the late 60's California sound, Spirit has long remained an exciting and innovative example of just how wide the rock spectrum can be. From Ed Cassidy's status as the oldest working drummer in Rock and Roll (Cass recently edged out Ringo Star and Ginger Baker in the Reader's Poll in England's New Musical Express for best drummer of all time), to Randy's tenure as a 15 year old guitarist with Jimi Hendrix, Spirit has an incredible history and a wealth of stories. Randy California, stepson of 60's Jazz drummer Ed (Cass) Cassidy, played with Jimi Hendrix, who gave him the nickname, for three months in New York, Soon after the band was formed, Spirit's musical accomplishments became legendary. The original band played together until 1971. Between 1971 and Randy California's accidentaly death in 1997, Spirit released several additional albums with varying lineups. In some of the latter work, Randy California performed all the parts except for cameo appearances by other members. REFLECTIONS OF SPIRIT In 1965 jazz drummer Ed (Cass) Cassidy was playing gigs with Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal in a group called the Rising Sons at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles. It was here that Cass and Bernice Pearl met and were soon married. A year later Cass took the family with him to New York City when he went to play some jazz gigs. With high hopes they loaded up the 'ol yellow Chevy which they called "The Yellow Submarine" and headed across America. When they arrived in New York City Cass discovered that stepson Randy's guitar had been lost in shipping. Randy went to Manny's Music to replace his guitar. He was only 15 when he met Jimi Hendrix. "Jimi was playing a Stratocaster in the back of the store and our eyes met and there was instant spiritual contact" recalls Randy. With the boldness of a teen, Randy asked Jimi (not knowing who he was) if he could play that guitar. Jimi complied and was so impressed he invited Randy to play with him at his gig in the Village that night. The Marquee read "Jimi James & The Blue Flames." For the next three months, five sets a night, Randy played in the band. "It was an incredible experience," says Randy. "A lot of people don't know this about Jimi, but he was one of the most gentle and generous people I've ever known." To distinguish Randy from the other Randy in the band, Jimi started calling him Randy California and the name stuck. After three months Jimi was ready to go to England to put together another band and he invited Randy along. His parents refused to let him go...he was only 16 years old! This was right before the Jimi Hendrix experience. Jimi never forgot the friendship.

Clear Spirit

I have been looking for this album for so long, to replace one that was lost, that I had almost forgotten how great it is. After I listen to it, the songs stay in my head and I enjoy it even more. I especially love \"Ice\", \"Give a Life\", \"So Little Time to Fly\", and, of course,
\"Dark Eyed Woman\". But, just when you thought it couldn\'t get any better.....Spirit always came through.

Spirit showing off their dynamic range on this great disc.

When I reviewed Family I stated that there were 3 reasons why the release date for that album[summer of 69] was wrong.First, I had a copy of the L.P. as a Christmas present in 68 and second, I saw Spirit for the 1st time promote the album on tour with Blood,Sweat &Tears; three weeks later in mid Jan. at Alexandria,Va.The Spirit Part of the show lasted over 2 and 1/2 hours- not bad for a band that had only released up to date-2 L.P.s barely 45 min.long. Spirit was a fabulous Jam-band at this time who could take any song on their setlist and could inflate a 4min. to over 15 or 20 min. to the delight of their fans. This Now brings us to the Third and most critical part of my review on Family mentioned here for the 1st time- because it belongs here-not there.Defensive;aren`t I.Anyway I was trucking through Montgomery Mall Just outside Bethesda,Md. feeling low because although I had money,I simply could find anything to wet my musical appetite. Both Record depts. in the mall dept stores and the record shop in the mall let me down for 1 reason-I set my standard on Spirit and nothing could compare. Now who would think that I would find 1 copy of Clear in a bargain bin for $4.99 at the mall five and dime? I still have that copy of Clear today. When I got home and put it on- Far-Out!This album ranks amoung the 1st four as an equal. The 1st four; Spirit, Family,Clear and 12dreams are the true essentials because they reflect the true genius of the original five members and like the colors in a prism how well they covered the range of musical perspectives.Clear just had a range unlike the earlier releases. My personal favorites; Dark Eyed Woman, Groundhog, Apple Orchard,So Little Time To Fly,Cold Wind,Policeman`s Ball,Ice, GIVE A LIFE-TAKE A LIFE,I`m Truckin`,Clear, Caught and New Dope In Town. Wow-I named them all-notice? Fow Spirit enthusiasts-aren`t we all?- I saw the same video spot that is on Spirit Video History 2- 1984. It was either Nov. or Dec.1969 and I saw it on Local T.V. at a friends house in Mystic Conn. where I was stationed at nearby Groton,Conn. 1984/Sweet Stella Baby was released right before Christmas on 45rpm.About three weeks after I bought Clear, Spirit did a free concert in Wheaton,Md.-late July-early August. It was to be a free show at the Wheaton Youth Center for the 1st 1000 fans at 8pm. I was across the Street[Conn Ave.] at 6 having dinner with my people when I noticed a large crowd gathering at the youth center. We got across and fell in line.Much to our surprise the word had gotten out because there were at least 35 people in front of us and at least 200-225 behind at 6:20.By 6:45 they opened the doors and we were let inside. It was an S.R.O. setting-No seats. The crowd was throwing a frisbee around when it landed on the stage. I got on Stage to Throw it out to someone when I noticed a scaffold 2thirds of the hall away-10ft.-and a guy setting up one of those Iron Butterfly oil screen light shows.I gonna sail this sucker over everyone`s head and out reached hand right over to the on the scaffold. Well just as I was letting go,a gentle hand came down on my right shoulder, the frisbee flew all of 10ft. and hit some girl in the back of the head. I looked around abruptly to see who dared rob me of my 15min.to fame- It was Ed Cassidy- Who simply smiled, pointed to the edge of the stage and said something like have a seat over there -we are about to go on.For the next 1hour45min,the band spent over an hour on Clear alone. One song Iclearly remember was Caught- A girl swayed back and forth trance like while Spirit jammed hypnotically for 15min. or better. Although I had just seen the band in Jan. Covers on Family were done different. The concert is legendary in Wash,D.C. history-It is said that over 3500 fans squeezed in to see Spirit that night-accomadated by 3 performances, each over 1 and 1/2 hours long. I know because I was fortunate enough to get in for the 2nd. When I stepped outside at 11:10 and saw the 3rd wave coming I couldn`t believe it.Clear, as well as the other original band releases are timeless classics, a must for any serious music lover.

probably thier best lp,because it was the last one with the first lineup.
its sad they split after this and the following albums, although good, lacked a sound that was simply different than any other band ever had.
randy and mark played so well off each other especially on 1984 that its just a shame this was it.
