Introduction

"It was a great ride" was what one fan said after a classic Icewater show in early 2003. "You gave me everything I wanted to hear tonight. it was all so diverse."

Such comments are already being made about Icewater's debut self-titled, independent release. The fourteen tracks on this album range from hard-hitting, mixed-meter rock tunes like "Conform" to straight ahead folk inspired songs like "It's About Time". The final track on the album, "Amphimacer", reveals itself as a poetic and musical puzzle that travels through many emotional and melodic chapters, culminating in a whirlpool of white noise that leaves the listener begging for a track 15.

Icewater has been working long hours on this album to ensure its quality and success in the industry. "It's been a long time coming" says Ike Moore, Icewater 's frontman and lead vocalist. "The writing on the album stems in so many different directions and conveys so many different emotions to people... The response has been overwhelmingly good."

And it just keeps getting better. Icewater is only beginning to break the surface of the Canadian music scene. "This is not a resting point" says Kevin Kennedy , Icewater guitarist, about the release of the debut disc. "It's a starting point. we move forward from here."

In the Studio

Working with producer Matt Weston was a convenient option for the band, considering his residency in Icewater behind the sticks and skins. "We're very proud of it" says Weston. "It was a long process but it was definitely worth it when you hear the outcome."

Every member of this band is a multi-instrumentalist. "Only half of us in the band are on our primary instrument" says Weston. "We're all very involved in this band in different ways and we all have a lot of very different ideas. We have to be flexible when we get together to make sure that everyone has their say while keeping what's good for the song in mind".

This record recalls the raw energy and power of an Icewater live show. "It's what we wanted from the very beginning" recalls Eric Varillas , bass player in Icewater . "We set out to make an album that sounds raw, live, and real." Fans of the band, the Icewater Legion, will be dealt their usual, healthy dose of Icewater to which they are so accustomed.

History

Icewater earned their stripes playing bars around London, Ontario for the last year. Every member of Icewater has a classical background, to which they continue to feed. However, the true passion of this band is to write original material, perform it, and to grow together as a Canadian rock act.

Icewater continues to be a completely independent group. All financing, promotion and bookings are taken care of from within. "It sounds like a lot of work... and it is... but it's nice to have a handle on all of this so that we realize first hand all the hardships that are associated with being in a rock band at this level" says Ike Moore. "That way, we'll never take it for granted."

Playing in their hometown to a university crowd has cultivated a large contingent of fans in the band's fan club, The Icewater Legion. Over the last year, the legion has grown to a strong number and continues to grow at every show.

With the release of this, their debut album, Icewater is confident that it encapsulates a sound that is unique to the independent music scene, and that the road to success is getting shorter.

Few bands have their own definitive sound, let alone a band so early in its career. I can't wait to see where they go from here!
