Genius in need of recognition
author: Tom Brophy
Nearly every band has a weak point. The Pumpkins were brilliant but Billy Corgan couldn't sing. L7 always reverted to shouty punk tunes when the ideas were in short supply. All the current wave of nu-metal bands have one lyrical theme - "everybody hates me and I want a bigger allowance!". Goth and stoner rock bands frequently veer into parody and hypocrisy or simply become too pretentious for words. I FOUND GOD, on the other hand, combine all of the best features of all of the best bands you've ever heard, and there's no down side! Stick the Pumpkins, Queen Adreena, Soundgarden, P.J. Harvey, Black Sabbath and Scheer into a blender, and this is what you get. This doesn't mean that "Before he turned the gun on himself" is an album full of mimicry - it's the result of considerable talent and as a result (like all the best inventions) you wonder why nobody has done it before. IFG have received virtually no coverage in the British press and that's scandalous. Buy this album.
