ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Iman Spaargaren Undercurrent

Iman Spaargaren played the prestigious Young VIP Tour in the Netherlands in 2012 with his jazzquartet Iman Spaargaren Quartet. Iman, also know as frontman of Thelonious4 (thelonious4.com), European Union Quartet (jazzquartet.eu) and Captain Hook (captainhook.nl), has played in numerous radio- and television shows such as 'Vrije Geluiden', 'JaBoGumbo Show', 'Mijke's Middag', 'Weekend Winfried' and at festivals such as North Sea Jazzfestival and Manchester Jazzfestival and at jazzclubs such as BIMhuis (NL), Jazz International (NL), Poppari (FIN), Dolans Jazz Club (IRE), Rytmihäiriö Club (FIN), B Flat (GER), Sounds Jazzclub (BE), Seven Arts Centre (UK). Iman is an internationally very active musician; the last couple of years he did tours in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Germany and Finland.
Iman's saxophone playing catches the ear with his very personal and lyrical tone and inventive use of rhythm.

Iman thought about setting up a new group to play some of his exciting, true-hearted, free and intense compositions. He put together a great band of top players from the Dutch and international scene: Guitarist Guillermo Celano (Celano/Baggiani Group, winner of the North Sea Jazz Composition Project 2013), drummer Jasper van Hulten (Wouter Hamel, Erik Vloeimans), bass player Cord Heineking (Simin Tander), piano player Franz von Chossy (Franz von Chossy Quintet) and trumpet player Dirk Beets (ex-Monsieur Dubois).

Line up Iman Spaargaren Undercurrent:
Iman Spaargaren - saxophones, bass clarinet
Guillermo Celano - guitar, effects
Cord Heineking - double bass
Jasper van Hulten - drums
Franz von Chossy - keyboard
Dirk Beets - trumpet

"Iman Spaargaren: a busy man, not deprived of outstanding musical qualities, as an instrumentalist as well as a composer. On his newest album all 11 compositions are his writing. The pieces have an almost natural simplicity and sound transparant and spacious due to the line up and the high quality of Spaargaren's bandmembers - guitarist Guillermo Celano, bassist Cord Heineking and drummer Jasper van Hulten. It is nice listenable modern harmonic jazz, which has solos of great stature by the tenorsaxophonist - sometimes on bass clarinet - Spaargaren and guitarist Celano"
(Jacques Los, Draaiomjeoren.com, 2013).

"Spaargaren excels in strong melodies and lyricism. Playing fast doesn't win of formlessness, even fast runs reveal their melodical format. Besides that much more freedom is to be heared compared to earlier works. Spaargaren must have felt an inner urge to go that way since he wrote 11 new compositions for 'In The Moment'. One of reasons might be touring together with Cactus Truck during the Young VIP Tour 2012, or the influence of guitarist Guillermo Celano, who's been up front all the time" (Jan Jasper Tamboer, Jazzenzo.nl, 2013).

"Iman Spaargaren is a saxophonist with a melodic approach. When digging deeper in his thematic material, Iman looks for a marriage between story telling and exploring" (Hessel Fluitman, jazzflits.nl/jazzflits11.10.pdf 2013).

“Spaargaren is skilful at blowing long lyrical lines. The sound of the Quartet is attractive and the compositions are very varied” (de Volkskrant, BIMhuis concert review 1 march 2012).

“Spaargaren has a strong voice of his own. Quality and talent are undeniable, his melodic and harmonic caracteristics are strong, a true choice as Young VIP” (Jazzenzo, BIMhuis concert review 1 march 2012).

"Contemporary adventure. Iman Spaargaren Quartet and Septet play eager and energetic, but remain within a melodical spectrum" (Johan Bakker, Nederlands Dagblad).

"Iman is an important player in the Dutch jazzscene" (Jazzflits.nl).

Press about 'Flow' from Iman Spaargaren Quartet & Septet (also available on CDBaby):
"Flow is filled with enthousiastic, hard-driven, contemporary jazz. The compositions by Iman vary from very expressive to dreamy, from light-footed to funky" (SJU Jazzpodium, Utrecht).

"A promising modern jazz album. Iman's compositions stand for very melodical, light-footed musical lines. Spaargaren solos with great skill: modest and beautifully frased; he lets his emotions run free" (draaiomjeoren.nl).
