Review of song Handrail
author: Crystal
This song will forever hold a very special place in my heart, as it was my introduction to Immoral Fibres. I was instantly hooked! Matt Kurzban's lyrics are straightforward, telling the tale with clarity. This is a story of a man who sounds hopelessly lost in a downward spiral. He knows what the problem is, and says he knows that there's a smart way to release the handrail he's holding onto for support. The lyrics tell the tale, but the dynamics of Matt's vocals give the words life, and weave the tale expertly. The anguish that this man is mired in is evident through the expressive vocals. The background vocals echo this. The last vocals are imploring; the desperate cry of the subconscious pleading to be heard and finally losing the battle. The music supplies the vivid emotional detail of this story. From the openining guitar's haunting riffs, I am drawn into this dilemma. When all the instruments kick in, it has a taunting sound to it. I can feel the confusion in the man's mind. The same haunting guitars, repeated in the deep background of the song, the discordant notes of the two guitars where the riff ends before repeating, echo in the subconscious the helpless, hopeless feelings. The keyboard lends a dreamlike quality to the tale. The winding down of the last drumbeat and the taunting cymbals lead me to believe that he will not seek the answer which remains just out of his grasp. He will remain stuck where he is, despite wanting to be an example for baby brother. I'm left wondering if he makes it out. Matt's attention to the tiniest detail which ties everything together is GENIUS!
