ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Inca Son's music comes straight from the group's Peruvian Andean homeland. Its music is distinguished by the pervasive sound of the "sikus" or panpipes. This instrument, in the hands of the band's brilliant pan flautists (one of the world's most ancient instruments) ranges from lively and happy to plaintive and haunting, assuming at times the sound of the wind, at other times the sound of a bird in flight. The guitar, charango (10-string Andean guitar), and goatskin-covered bombo (Andean drum) complete Inca Son's sound, in addition to resonant vocals which express, in the words of one Boston Globe critic, "the joy of living close to the earth, like the best of folk music." Much of the band's material is original, and has won distinctions such as the 2007 Independent Music Award for "Best Traditional World Song" (Trip Through The Andes Mountains). Another of the band's compelling original songs, "When the Heavens Cry" (composed just after the tragic events of 9/11) has passed the "million views" mark on youtube. Inca Son is also known for its original arrangements of classic popular tunes, all of which are suffused with a vibrant Andean flavor. Its live concerts, with the band resplendent in the costumes of their Inca forebears, have been called "a banquet for the eyes and ears."
