8. Rise and Take a Stand
Copyright 1998, Dana Clark

We are a family
The human family
We are in trouble
Can we survive?
When so many of our children
struggle just to stay alive
Can you see their frightened eyes?
Rise and take a stand
Lend a helping hand
Rise and take a stand
Lend a helping hand

When we help someone
To help another
to help another
It helps us all
When so many people need you
Can you hear them when they call?
Can you catch them when they fall?
Rise and take a stand
Lend a helping hand
Rise and take a stand
Lend a helping hand

The world we're making
Will be our children's
Will be their children's
On and on forevermore
Will it be a peaceful planet?
Will it be a world of war?
We can make it so much more
rise and take a stand
Lend a helping hand
Rise and take a stand
Lend a helping hand

Our brother's hungry
Our sister's homeless
Our daughter's dying
Our son's at war
It's a desperate situation
Like we've never faced before
What's the future hold in store?
Rise and take a stand
Lend a helping hand
Rise and take a stand
Lend a helping hand

11. Peace Is a Choice
Rudi Harst, Copyright 1999

Peace is a choice
Peace is a choice
I raise my voice
I make peace my choice
Peace Peace Peace Peace
I make peace my choice

I make joy my choice
I make joy my choice
I raise my voice
I make joy my choice
Joy Joy Joy Joy
I make joy my choice

I make love my choice
I make love my choice
I raise my voice
I make love my choice
Love Love Love Love
I make love my choice

I make joy my choice
I make peace my choice
I make peace my choice
I make peace my choice
Peace

13. World of Justice, World of Peace
Dana Clark, Copyright 2003

I want to give my children
a world that's safe in every way
But now the radio reports
new dangers every day
Within this world of war
my only weapon is a song
All alone I'm not strong enough
to right what's wrong

CHORUS: But if we walk hand in hand
and we work side by side
If we join heart to heart
'til we see eye to eye
Then every dream we dream
can be reality
In a world of justice, a world of peace

Can we be sure of freedom
when so many are not free
Why do some have plenty
while some live in poverty
We grow so tired of the struggle
for the problems never end
But in each other's eyes
we find the faith to try again

CHORUS: For when we walk hand in hand...

Seven billion of us
on a planet that's so small
Someday we may realize
we're family after all
And as we reach out to heal each other,
set each other free
We'll find only sisters, brother,
not one enemy

CHORUS: Then we will walk hand in hand...

Not on the recordings:
Patriotic Medley
Sing to the tune of "My country 'tis of thee..."
(This will come at the end of the re-enactment
of the meeting on 9-11-1906 when Mahatma Gandhi
presented his method of Satyagraha.
The actors will begin singing and the Peace Choir will join in)

God save our gracious King
Long live our noble King
God save the King
May he defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the King

My country 'tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
Of thee I sing
Land where my fathers died
Land of the pilgrim's pride
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring

Not on this land alone
But be God's mercies known
From shore to shore
Lord make the nation see
That men should brothers be
And form one family
The wide world o'er

(Sing to the tune of "America the Beautiful")
America, America
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea

Oh, beautiful for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain

America, America
God shed her grace on thee
And crown thy good with sisterhood
From sea to shining sea

"Increase the Peace" was produced by Texas musicians in conjunction with the celebration of A Season for Nonviolence (SNV), a national event based on the work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Some wonderfully talented songwriters, musicians and poets donated their work to complete this CD of fourteen songs and two poems. It comes packaged in an eco-friendly cardboard sleeve. Funds raised by the sale of "Increase the Peace" benefit SNV in San Antonio, Texas. In 2005, several thousand dollars were raised to benefit services for the homeless in our city. (As Gandhi said, "The worst violence is poverty.") In 2006, the funds raised by SNV in San Antonio will benefit agencies providing services to children in need.

Visit the website www.songsofpeace.org for more information, and to order CDs in bulk to use for fundraising purposes. For inquiries, contact Dana Clark: danapiano@sbcglobal.net.

Working for peace must be conceptualized in a far broader sense than merely working to end war. Work that brings people together in cooperative and creative endeavor is an act of peace that spreads ripples far beyond its origin. Music can catalyze personal transformation, unite people in a single cause, and motivate social change. Behind every social movement is powerful music. Each "Increase the Peace" CD is a seed of peace that raises consciousness and helps us build a culture of nonviolence. (As MLK said, "We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means.")

A Season for Nonviolence is based on the work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. It was co-founded in 1998 by Arun and Sunanda Gandhi of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence. It has been officially endorsed by Coretta Scott King, Kofi Annan, His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet, and many others from all sectors of the world leadership community. SNV lasts from January 30 to April 4, spanning the 64-day period between the death dates of Gandhi and King. It is a national educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. It reflects the belief that each person can move the world in the direction of peace through daily nonviolent choices and actions.

To read more about the national work of SNV go to the website www.agnt.org. The "Universal Declaration on Nonviolence" listed on that page makes especially good reading.

During the next SNV you can keep up with events in San Antonio by visiting the peaceCENTER website at www.salsa.net/peace. It's such a cool website you should visit it anyway.

WORLD OF JUSTICE, WORLD OF PEACE

(I have been privileged to work for peace and social justice with wonderful partners who help me hold onto my dream for a better world. This work enriches my life and keeps hope alive for others.)

RISE AND TAKE A STAND, LEND A HELPING HAND

(For do-gooders everywhere: Suggestions for saving
the world, one small action at a time.)
