1. Identifying marks; indications.

Coming from distinctly different musical backgrounds, Betsy Ullery and David Ward integrate the organic and the digital into innovative electronic music that is "INDICIA." Betsy comments, "Our music is about combining two forces, the reality of our world and the reality of our collective subconscious. Our songs blend original electronic loops and samples with harmonic melody and dance-floor drum beats."

Hailing from Wales, Massachusetts, Ullery's music career began when she lived in the artist's colony of Ogunquit, Maine. Her combination of original acoustic folk tunes and sincere lyricism soon found her playing with various musicians from Portland, Maine to Philadelphia and beyond. After an East Coast tour in 1997 Betsy packed up and headed west, staying briefly in San Francisco then heading south to Los Angeles where she recorded her first full length CD "Heavy Dreams" with the band Ebb and producer Pete Snell. While she loved her folk roots, Betsy found herself yearning to create something new and original that could combine her other major stylistic influences, funk and electronic dance music, and send her in a different direction than her previous excursions had taken.

Enter David Ward. A street-wise tech geek by nature, Ward learned piano at an early age and studied at the prestigious Washington Conservatory of Music in D.C. for 10 years. Influenced by early club-style breakbeat artists such as DJ Icey and Bassbin Twins, Ward found his electronic muse in Uberzone's "Botz Synthetic." With experiences ranging from drum duties in DC hardcore band Damnation AD to good ol solitary bedroom production, Dave found his tastes leaning heavily toward the latter. Deciding to take his ideas and music in a new direction, Dave surrounded himself with various noise making and warping tools and gave in to a desire to do nothing less than get booties shaking, feet moving, and minds working.

Audiences responded well to the unique combination of Betsy's ethereal yet sexual stage presence and Dave's pounding beats and warped soundscapes. Holding nothing back, the two soon gained the audience's attention and have since played numerous LA gigs to favorable response, including a number of sold out shows at the Viper Room in Hollywood and the CBS main stage at the West Hollywood Gay Pride Festival.

Critical response has been positive as well. Alex Tietz of Femmusic.com says, "Indicia has a style that is alive and moving. The duo's songs come at you full force and don't stop. Among the best are 'Powder', 'Incomplete' and 'It's Coming Around.' Their work stands alone, and is a name the labels should pay attention to." Music Connection named them one of the top 100 artists of the year for 2002; and at Artist Launch (http://www.artistlaunch.com) they enjoyed the number one song for 6 weeks.

Although the last few years have proven fruitful, 2003 looks to provide even more exposure and excitement for this duo and their growing fan base. At home in LA, they have finished their debut CD and are playing out regularly in order to hone their stage show to a sexy, precise, bass filled presentation. When asked what is most important to Indicia for 2003, they both agree: "Continuing to challenge ourselves to be innovative and not compromise; To be proud of the art we produce and continue to push through the walls of the LA music scene, keeping our audience and musical explorations growing and evolving."
