Ingrid D. Johnson is a Winnipeg-based published poet, spoken word recording artist, singer in training, published songwriter, and Filmmaker.
Johnson wrote songs "Tired", "My Soul", "Alright", "I Believed" and co-wrote "Only You", "Move on", and "Flo-Ing Energy" on R&B vocalist FLO's self-titled debut album "FLO" (also available on CD baby). The album, which recieved 4 out of 5 stars in The Winnipeg Sun, The Winnipeg Free Press, and Winnipeg's Uptown Magazine listed Johnson's first song "Tired" as being one of the songs on the album that gave the album its diversity. Johnson says the song was inspired by a dream she had of Alicia Keys asking her the question, "if you could sing ... what would you sing?” Her response turned into a boho-jazz creation that expresses the way she felt about intimate relationships at the time.
Johnson's first collection of poetry "Little Black Butterfly in Iridescent Sunlight," deals with the emotional trauma of childhood incest as well as issues with low self-esteem, dysfunctional relationships, lust, love, introspection, and spiritual transcendence. Since the launch of the book, on July.13th 2005, it was number five on the bestseller’s list at McNally Robinson. She has received public support and exposure for her work in The Winnipeg Public Library’s 2006 September/October newsletter, The Metro and The Lance community paper, and Uptown (local Arts paper). She has been showcased on Def Poetry Jam’s website (hosted by Verse Makers), appeared on FLAVA 107.9's Big Phat Morning show, interviewed on CKUW’s "Grammar Skool" and “Say it Sistah” radio show on 95.9 F.M., CBC’s Radio One "Up to Speed" show, CBC’s National radio show "Outfront", CBC local news, CBC News world, Shaw T.V., and Bravo!News (Chum T.V.). In May 2008, Johnson was also featured on Hawaii's internet blog talk radio show "MIC CHECK".
Johnson takes special pride in using her poetic skills to shed light on the emotional trauma of sexual abuse and various other social issues. In April 2007, Johnson made her theatrical debut in Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues (V-Day) to help stop violence against women at University of Winnipeg. In addition, Johnson also received invitations to Toronto's 7th Annual Reel World Film Festival and Hawaii’s “Girl Fest” for her first short experimental narrative “The Real Woman”.

rated on a grading scale of A to D http://www.uptownmag.com/archive/feature/06nov02.htm
ARTIST: Ingrid D. Johnson
ALBUM: "Black Butterfly"(Indie)
RATED B (****stars)
Johnson is a local poet, hip hop lyricist and spoken-word performer whose debut project is an intensely personal recounting of life as a survivor of incest. It’s powerful, heady stuff, and at times the words may be too painful for some. Nevertheless, producers and performers Sunil "ISHQ"
Bector, Christian Devoin, Solidaze and Khela (aka Kutdown) were impressed enough to provide backing tracks free-of-charge for the 15 cuts on the album. The end result is a spoken-word recording with a jazzy, soulful backing that wouldn’t sound out of place alongside similar work by better-known performers. At her best, Johnson is clear and passionate and her images and descriptions are hauntingly vivid. — JK
