Album Notes

Formed in summer 2002, and grounded in improvisation, Initial Ascent is: violinist Matthew Szemela, oboist Michael Albert and pianist/composer Philip Fournier. The present release distills the spirit of Initial Ascent improvisation in a through-composed allegory in 7 movements with ostinato writing, and an overall introspective mood.

Fans of Oliver Messaen and other adventurous composers would do well to check this out: a trio of oboe, violin and piano rooted in the classical tradition but reaching to ambient jazz and non-wussy New Age. Think "Quartet for the End of Time" crossed with Miles' "In A Silent Way." Wonderful music to play on the house stereo on a summer night while you're sitting in the backyard stargazing.
