Album Notes

Ok. So what do you need to know? Band from Vancouver, British Columbia, where the aloof and the apathetic join in happy marriage, concerned only with who wears the right clothes, styles the right hair, and keeps the right politics, all the while begrudgingly accepting that there's something probably much more interesting going on south of the border. But change is in the air, and it has an almost unpronounceable Latin name. In Medias Res is making sure that the rest of North America knows about it. Upon its initial release, Of What Was was praised by each and every critic who happened to stumble upon it. Produced by Jonathan Anderson (Jonathan Inc/Radiogram), "Unique," "wonderful," and "masterpiece," are just a few of the lofty words ascribed to the record by local press and zines in the know. In Medias Res can look forward to more of the same as they take one of Vancouver's best live shows across Canada from late May to late July 2005, their third and largest trek to date. Formed in 1999, but not hitting their stride until some years later, In Medias Res has become one of the most talked about bands in Vancouver, building up a formidable yet diverse following where you are just as likely to meet someone who digs the latest Sum 41 disc as you are a scenester nervously awaiting the moment the next Tom Waits' hits vinyl. Considering the varied influences on the band, ranging from Pedro the Lion to Sade and Talk Talk to Weezer, this diversity is not only expected but welcomed. Previous to selling out of their first pressing of Of What Was, In Medias Res also released and subsequently sold out of 500 copies of the Intimacy EP. They have shared the stage with such notable acts as Death From Above 1979 (Vice), Pedro the Lion (Jade Tree), Damien Jurado (Secretly Canadian), and Stabilo (EMI).

Best CD ever Recorded. The End.

"Of What Was" is simply my favorite album ever. More than half of the time in the last 2-3 years it has been in my CD player. Wonderfully recorded (i'm becoming more and more a vogville [studio] fan :-), amazingly well-written, and HONEST. Andrew sings like he means it, ash makes sounds that you don't realize are within the human hearing spectrum, Flowers falls in perfectly for every mood, and Steve brings an unbelievable percussion selection to every song. I love this CD. If I had a child (which i don't) and a house (which i don't) and it caght on fire - I would ensure the safety of this CD first. Truly amazing.

For me this was... wow

I'd never heard of In Medias Res when i purchased the CD and to tell the truth, I was worried that Of What Was might not live up to my expectations, but my pessimism was unfounded. This is an unbelievably well crafted CD. Everything from the quality of the recordings, to the order of the songs is just right. However it's the little things that have kept this CD in my CD player since i bought it (obviously IMR put a lot of time into this). So for me this was.. wow. However some of my friends have not been as excited about it as i have so i have to give it 4 out of 5 stars. If you like emo.. this CD fits perfectly right next to Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab For Cutie, and Pedro the Lion in a record collection. BUY THIS CD!
