Essential, unique, beautiful
author: Danny Avery
I bought this based entirely on hearing about 40 seconds of the album's second track, "myphilosophy", and it's proved to be one of the best impulse purchases I've ever made, EASILY leaping into my top 5 albums of all time.
The bottom line is - if you love music, you NEED this album. The 13 tracks on offer (though 2 tracks are essentially interludes) are ridiculously diverse, yet still all sound like they SHOULD be together. According to Inner's Wikipedia article they are "an indie rock band", however "lovetheonlyway" ranges from sleepy electronica, to heart-wrenchingly beautiful acoustic stuff, to catchy choruses over hip-hop beats, to experimental folk, via completely indescribable songs like "myphilosophy" and "morninglikeme".
Lyrically, the album is brutally honest and quite bitter - I defy you to listen to "stories", concentrate on the lyrics, and not feel like you've just had your guts ripped out. The central themes of lost love and wanting a happy, simple life are dealt with openly and honestly, without being obvious and predictable; cleverly without being pretentious.
It's hard to believe that this album is already 7 years old - I've listened to it at least 100 times since I bought it and it still sounds fresh, I haven't got bored of a single song. It's a shame this is Inner's only full-length, but the band recently started gigging again this year, so a second album could well be on the cards.
"lovetheonlyway" is one of the most raw, emotional, eclectic and beautiful albums I've ever had the pleasure of purchasing, and I urge you to buy it.

Just recieved my second copy of this album in the mail and am currently listening to 'stories' and am just now recovering from 'Downtome'. By the first "I wanted you" , I was sobbing. By the third, I was punching holes in the walls and throwing around furniture. Not really but the point is its' not often a piece of music creates such powerful emotions and this album does. Hair standing up, about to hyperventilate. Amazing stuff. I can't wait for the next album cause I can't get enough of this one. Thank you Jennifer. You absolutely blow me away.
