Album Notes

If you have heard my solo live stuff and liked it, know that this is absolutely nothing like what you have heard before. Then again, there are no vocals on this disc, so you may love it.

This collection is made up primarily of the unrefined, jagged, pointy drafts. They’re primarily all first-take drafts, with no more than five drafts and no track taking more than the remainder of a given day to travel from conception to the collection of audio waves etched into a track on this disc. They may be re-recorded in a more pristine environment at a suitable later date, but each recording as it stands is an accurate reflection of a given point in time.

Either that or it’s a bunch of self-flagellation fuelled by an over-abundant feeling of self-importance. A number of encouraging people ought to shoulder part blame, in case of the latter.

Each track is a solo electric guitar. No layers, no accompaniment, for better or worse, no touch-ups.

Instantiation 1

In the small print Matt Geddes claims his recently produced CD, Instantiation 1, may contain traces of nuts. If by nuts he means balls, he’s right on the money. His eight tracks of improvised guitar work are delivered with blend of guts and skill. If you are familiar with his solo live blues renditions of Son House, Robert Johnson classics and Australian artist Chris Finnen you may be surprised at what you find when you put this disc into your home entertainment system. While the first track, Trans-Pacific has a great blues sound; Matt moves the listener through a range of styles and sounds, showing his broad range of musical influences. For those more attuned to a metal sound, you may be captured by Searing Chaos or Footsteps in the Dark. The nearly six minutes of musical tension in Footsteps it built by a brilliant foregrounding and backgrounding of sound. As the listener follows the night walker, the night stalker is never far behind. Similarly, Cage has the clear ringing tone of melting ice, yet manages to create a blend of the melodic and the disturbing. This capacity to create an uneasy balance of emotions and experiences into the one musical moment is what makes this CD well worth and second and third close listening. Tucked away in unexpected corners, Matt has managed to hide unexpected gems. My personal favourites – Trans-Atlantic, Cage and Footsteps in the Dark. But Somebody’s Little Girl and But the Secret are filled with guitar work to please any discerning lover of guitar. The notes accompanying the CD claim this is a collection of first drafts, a reflection of a given musical moment. One can only hope that there will be many other moments to come. A CD of guitar music for the guitarist.
