Gorgeous and dreamy, this new offering from the innocence mission collects standards and traditional songs that singer Karen Peris has sung to her children as lullabies since they were born. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to organizations work

notes

the innocence mission began as four friends who met during a Catholic high school production of the musical Godspell. Since their fortuitous parochial meeting, they have released five critically acclaimed albums: The Innocence Mission (A&M 1989), Umbrella (A&M 1991), Glow (A&M 1995), Birds Of My Neighborhood (RCA 1999), Small Planes (W.A.R. 2001) and befriended (Badman 2003). Although they remain friends, the one consistent incarnation of the innocence mission revolves around the inspired musical (and literal) marriage of guitarist Don Peris and his wife, vocalist/pianist Karen Peris.

Gorgeous and dreamy, this new offering from the innocence mission collects standards and traditional songs that singer Karen Peris has sung to her children as lullabies since they were born. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to organizations working to aid impoverished children throughout Africa.

"After hearing Bono speak this past May at my brother's college graduation about the plight of orphaned children in South Africa, our plans to make another benefit record were strengthened and propelled and we worked more quickly and spontaneously than usual. We recorded most of the songs over a three week period this summer, late at night, and it was really great fun. A lot of the singing was done live to Don's guitar playing. The spaciousness of the arrangements allowed for piano and pump organ and Mike's upright bass, " says Karen Peris.

Their last release, befriended, received critical acclaim including a 5 star review in Mojo and " #1 Album of the Year" by NPR reviewer Christian Brodal.

Press for Previous Releases:

"...the lyrics read like fine, wholly comprehensible Romantic poetry. For anyone in need of respite from Madonna's Catholic guilt, the Innocence Mission offers the rarer, intriguing tonic of Catholic joy." Los Angeles Times

"Of all the new singer-songwriters, Karen Peris is the most interesting to me." Joni Mitchell

The most relaxing CD in the world! I just got this CD to help my 8 month old son relax before bed. It's absolutely brilliant! The whole family loves it. The music is so soothing and calm it makes me want to fall asleep with him!

Karen's voice could soothe the crankiest baby OR adult. We bought this CD for our small son, but find we end up using it to wash away our own daily stress. Beautiful covers of many well loved songs... you will be transported to a better place. Go grab your favorite blankie and curl up for a treat!

  • Great versions of classic songs.

Little four-week old Carmen loves it! This cd and a humidifier guarantees sleep. But it also stands on its own for grownups too. Sparse, simple and soothing. Highly recommended.

  • This is an amazingly beautiful CD - I still cry when I hear it!

I bought this CD for my year-old son who has such struggles with sleep. I thought that if anyone has a magic cure it's IM. Well, it's not a magic cure (What is!) but it has helped sooth him in tough times. We listen to it every night during dinner and bath time and he loves it - as do I! It's so beatiful and sweet. It makes me weepy to hear some of the songs and think about my little baby growing up. Even without a family this is a must-have for anyone who wants music that is as cozy as snuggling up under a warm fleece blanket on a cold winters night.

Introducing a landmark lullaby album of wafting, dreamy, well-loved songs that parents will enjoy just as much as their kids will, if not more so. With her innocent, magical, smoky voice, Karen Peris captures all the sweetness, simplicity and beauty implied in a lullaby without compromising a mature, adult-friendly quality. From "Moon River" to "What A Wonerful World" to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," each song is set modestly and pristinely (mostly with just her voice and guitar), in a childlike and charming arrangment with all the enchantment of childhood captured and treasured. By far, this is one of the best lullaby albums available.
