Album Notes

Formed in 2005, In This Century is gaining popularity in their native Vermont for a unique blend of folk, rock and alt-country. Wearing influences that run from Merl Haggard and Johnny Cash to Fugazi and Neutral Milk Hotel, their sound is readily accessible, but rarely formulaic. This hybrid style has proven to be popular with listeners of all ages and backgrounds.

With each of the members having already established themselves in other musical endeavors, In This Century began as a casual side project between four childhood friends. It was during these informal sessions that a distinctive chemistry formed within the group. This led to the creation of a prolific amount of material that the band deemed ready for live presentation. The result is a sound that consistently references specific genres such as county, folk, bluegrass and rockabilly, but transcends the boundaries of those styles.

Awesome. Refreshing. I'd like to hear some of their other stuff. Almost listened to it too much.

This album is a breath of freah air in the otherwise stagnant alt country/rock scene. The catchy hooks and great songwriting remind me of Johhny Cash, Dylan or Tom Waits in a lot of ways. The lyrics are a poinant look at the lyricists soul and experiences. The guitar playing is excelently understated. As the accoustic and electric guitars blend well together, with the lead guitar player chiming in with well crafted solos. The percussion section, upright bass and drummer lay a solid foundation for the the music with tight rythems and a great backbeat. On occasion they utlilyze a mandolin and chello with excellent effect as it adds wonderfully to the atmosphere of tracks like "Never Go Home" and "Walk Away" track 8 "It all dissapears" remids me of an Irish drinking song with a little bit of Against Me thrown into it for good measure. "The fallen" while not quite as frenetic as "it all disapears" is an even more raucus tribute to that county punk style. In all it is a very good album that I would recomend to anyone looking for this style of music.
