Once a jazz cocktail lounge singer, television composer, theater experimeter and now the webmaster of San Francisco, this singer/songwriter and his piano threads a dreamy, after-hours sadness with a wise and compassionate outlook on life and music.
Counting influences ranging from Tori Amos to Bill Evans to Shirley Horn to Tom Waits, LET IT FALL includes 9 original songs and a cover of Joni Mitchell's WILLIE that's sure to be controversial.
"Isen's voice is a wonderful instrument that is fully as melancholy as the sound of an English horn."
-The Southern Voice
"Joni Mitchell is a common reference point for piano-playing female singer-songwriters, but Richard Isen may be one of the few men who courts the comparison in his ivory-tickling style, in his deep blue voice..."
-Performing Songwriter Top 12 DIY
"Listening to Isen's songs is like looking at an impressionist painting-his songs are blended shades of blue and purple, splashed with white..."

dreamy dark songs for a winter's night
author: Let It Fall
Gorgeous, melancholy music, evocative lyrics and imagery of
loneliness. A unique sound, kind of folk, kind of jazz,
piano based with lovely choral work on top and grounded by
the artist's lyric baritone. Filled with personal reflections,
the songs create a world and a mood - not an easy thing to
accomplish and well-done here. I especially like the cover of Joni
Mitchell's Willie, as we just don't get to hear love songs from
a man to a man very often. Looking forward to more, which is
the only reason I didn't give it a 5 - won't know if it's a
masterpiece until there's more to compare it to.

Provocative Piano
author: Bob Muller
I bought this CD to hear the cover of Joni Mitchell's "Willie". If you're a fan of Joni's piano stylings from Blue & Ladies of the Canyon, this will appeal to you. Richard's piano playing is mournful & beautiful, his voice is soothing and melancholy, and his skill as a composer is very strong. He is more concerned with creating musical "textures" than writing "pop" songs. When you play this CD, you won't leave with tunes in your head, but you WILL want to hear it again & again!

Unusually beautiful sounds and pictures
author: Enid Futterman
Unusually beautiful sounds and pictures. Richard Isen uses his instruments, including his own voice, in his own particularly, penetrating way. THE WAY THE WAVES COME is the loveliest, saddest song I've heard in a long time.
