Album Notes

'Foliba' is the long-awaited solo debut of Master Djembe Drummer Issa Coulibaly. 'Foliba' is a collection of lively and joyful takes on traditional West African songs. Each song ('foli'in Bambara, Coulibaly's native language) features Coulibaly's original arrangements for voice, flute, djembe, ballafon, djun djun and guitar. This CD features a superb supporting line-up of Mali's finest musicians, many of whom were his band mates before Coulibaly came to the US.

Subjects in this collection include: a tribute to Coulibaly's teachers, including Foussene Sissoko and Sega Cisse ('Madan Foli'); rituals of courtship and love ('Soungurubani'); prayers for Coulibaly's two daughters and children everywhere ('Zankoroni'); the pitfalls of helping ungrateful people ('Didadi Foli'); and gratitude for guidance from the spirit world ('Komo Foli').

Master Djembe Drummer Issa Coulibaly emigrated from Bamako, Mali to the United States in 2000 after many years of touring and recording in Africa and Europe with West African ensembles. He teaches and performs regularly all throughout New England and the East Coast including Puerto Rico.
