ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Itai Dattner and 'Tranquilo en Cuba'

I met Kenia in Trinidad, dancing for her living. She is young, black, pretty and she dances like hell. Not even 30 minutes passed since my arrival, and I am already drinking rum and playing with the local band at the centre of the old city. Eight players, a group of beautiful dancers, lots of rum and lots of happiness. A day later and we are playing a tune I wrote especially for Kenia. We played in a tiny dark room in the middle of the busy street, if you see it you wouldn't believe it is possible. It was so bizarre that a lot of tourists just stopped and took pictures.

Alejandro the drummer and I were riding his motorcycle all over Havana, searching for players and a good studio. We found great players and a great studio. All the players are teachers at ENA, The National School for Art and Music.

'Waltz 11' was written 5 years ago. Originally It was 12 bars but I cut 1 for the sake of September 11.

Finally, a refreshing sound in my Jazz collection.
It's not Itai Dattner's first jazz album, but I think it's he's best one. The collaboration of Itai Dattner and the Cuban musicians is a blast! The intelligent and delicate mixture of Bossa Nova, Arabic, Israeli and fusion Jazz gives this album a unique sound. When you'll hear it I'm sure you'll think like I did: 'I want more from this...'

Thanks for a great album
I enjoyed very much listening to this c.d.
The Cuban atmosphere expected from the album is felt in the beginning in the interesting melody of "Kenya"- switching on and off from Latin to up tempo swing and featuring great trumpet and piano solo and a dialogue between the trumpet and the sax at the end of the tune.
The compositions usually combine in them different musical traditions or elements (rhythms,melodies,grooves...) that naturally support each other and make a very interesting contrast such as in Blues for Cheli- a composition featuring an unconventional "balkan" influenced blues opening which leads to a mellow section of beautiful solos. The fresh and inspiring Waltz leads to an expressive sax solo followed by a bass solo.
Itai presents in this album excellent playing, composing and arranging skills and above all a great taste in combining them all. I loved the concept of having a short yet delicious four-course "musical meal" not overflowing the ear too much and leaving a desire to taste some more.
I would also like to praise the beautiful art work in the c.d. cover design.
Thank you for a great album.

The wonderful ideas from a great musician
After the first listen to this cd I found myself in Cuba, maybe not really there but something in the sound and the great playing by Cuban musicins and Itai, I just felt real latin style.
None of the tracks sound a like, great varity of style and amazing arrangments made the cd much more interesting.
If you gona listen to it, listen good to the third track Blues for Chelie and look for the Piano part, great jazz solo between all of that latin, just made me understand what a briliant arranger Itai is.
