Wow!

This truly international collaboration is chops-heavy, but it is also rich on melody, with beautiful intonation on the fretless basses. The collaboration is made up of six trios, two duets (Carbonne and Manring) and three solos. Playing-and composition-wise, there is a fairly even and democratic distribution: Carbonne wrote three, co-wrote one, and plays on nine of the tracks, as did Manring, while Di Piazza wrote four and plays on seven. Carbonne and Di Piazza contribute some immediately pleasing, slightly more conventional compositions, whereas Manring’s are a tad more angular – but no less enjoyable. The album as a whole is a riveting example of how three prophets of the low end can work and create together without treading on each other’s toes.
