Even the rank-and-file players are gifted soloists, as this fascinating new project by trumpeter Jack Sutte makes clear. Featuring a diverse array of modern and contemporary scores, including some composed at Sutte's behest, the disc stands as a major contribution to the genre and brilliant proof of the trumpet's wide range. The interstellar title stems from Adam Schoenberg's "Separated by Space," a raucous, highly enjoyable piece that demands and receives just about everything in Sutte's arsenal. No less imposing or engaging is HyeKyung Lee's "Frenetic Dream," a wild romp of 100 percent true to its name. Shorter works by David Loeb and Verne Reynolds show off the instrument's smoother, more lyrical sides, while a brief suite by Robert Pound offers touching musical portraits of the trumpeter's children.
