INCREDIBLE NEW MUSIC REVEALED IN LANDMARK RELEASE!

"Portrait of Jaco - The Early Years" takes you all the way back to the beginning when Jaco was developing his sound, his chops, his style, and his writing skills...back to when he was brazenly ignoring all the rules and well on his way to re-defining the role and sound of the electric bass. Within this musical adventure you will hear all of Jaco's historical 'firsts' including his first experimental home recordings, his first record appearance, his earliest bands, his very beginnings as a soloist, and most importantly his never-before-heard first original compositions. You'll also hear Jaco's first "Original Demos" recorded in Miami in 1974.

This revealing audio biography is comprised primarily of never-before-heard recordings of Jaco throughout his early creative years in florida, however, the real magic in "Portrait" comes through the spoken words of Jaco himself, and the spoken words of family, close friend's and fellow musician's as they fondly look back at their special times together with Jaco. Highlighting all of the significant developments and various influences along the way, this rare collection of materials is the complete story of Jaco's early formative years.

As a fitting tribute, Portrait also includes classic recordings and exclusive interviews with Grammy award winning artists Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Joe Zawinul, and Herbie Hancock. For the first time these accomplished veterans look back at their associations with Jaco and provide valuable insight into their historical collaborations.

Within this richly illustrated boxed set, "Portrait of Jaco" comes complete with an 80-page full-color booklet of exclusive photos and a seamless overview of text and liner notes that document the entire ten-year period during Jaco's inevitable rise to glory. Critically acclaimed, this inspirational fact driven story is the most comprehensive work that will ever be released on Jaco Pastorius.

"bob, POJ is completely, totally and mindblowingly great! it is everything i ever hoped it would be and so much more. you did an absolutely incredible job on it, and i am really really proud of you. this is history that you have created and it will live for ages as the definitive deal on our boy....it will be cherished for generations.

yeah bob!! GREAT JOB!"

"Bob, I am still absolutely awestruck over this amazing work you have created - 'Portrait of Jaco - The Early Years.' And especially so, since I am only too aware of the seemingly endless hurdles you have endured in order to bring this masterpiece to fruition. By holding steadfastly to your vision - despite all obstacles, neigh-sayers, and disbelievers - you have given not just my family, but the entire world a gift that will be treasured for generations. In one fell swoop - like a beacon in the night - POJ manages to cut through the darkness that engulfed my father's later years and shine a clear and brilliant light on the promise of those early years which shone as brightly as my Dad's beaming smile, and the South Florida sun. 'Portrait of Jaco' IS the World's greatest anthology and quite possibly the most important work that will ever be done on my father. And Bob, nobody - not a Major label - NOBODY on earth could have pulled this off but you. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!"

Your friend always,
- Mary Pastorius

Thank you! Finally a LEGITIMATE posthumous release celebrating the great master. I had the fortune of being around Jaco when he was at his best. I was also around when he was at his lowest, and some of the various "walkman tapes" and so-called "lost sessions" that have been released do a great disservice to his incredible legacy. POJ puts them all to shame. Hearing the seeds of so many of my favorite Jaco moments is a heart stopping experience. Listening to his development is awe inspiring, and motivates me to pick up my bass every day and still dream.

Once again kudos to Bob Bobbing. He should get an award for this!!!!!!!!

  • Melody is the key

This CD will make you love the bass guitar!

  • Wonderful
    author: Mike R

An amazing story of a talent that has not been matched since. Jaco was an extremely gifted player not only in his physical style but his creative approach. There are many very talented bass players playing today but none have come close to what Jaco acheived musically. At least none that I have heard. The music and the kind words from his peers on this cd confirm that. Thanks for a wonderful package.

  • Jaco is forever
    author: Jun Akiyama

This CD is invaluable for me. I remember Jaco's performance at "Live under the sky" in summer 1984.He was with a difference at that time. I felt his bass play line melancholy. But that play was jaco's naturally play. Sometime I would like to give flowers to Jaco's grave. Thanks CD BABY.

  • Si!
    author: Mary Candice (USA)

Angelo Liziero's review was accurate..."No word of mouth, please, just Jaco's bass!" If the blather of the human world were not enough, too many recording industries have produced a constant stream of nasty noise masquerading under the name of music. While being rude to music they have created a captured audience of half-listeners. Jaco Pastorius proves once and for all that music worth listening to...is worth listening to!

  • Wonderful Musical Journey
    author: BTR

This CD gives a fascinating and inspiring look into Jaco's life starting at the time he absorbed musical concepts like a sponge and ending with the period when he radiated music like a neutron star! The commentary gives a perspective of the feelings and moods of the times and takes you on a awesome journey with a once in a lifetime musical artist. Some complain about the verbal commentary that is inter-linked with the music however I felt that it gave great insight from Jaco's peers, mentors, family and friends who witnessed first hand Jaco's progression from talented youngster to musical giant. It's also great to hear Jaco during the early times when he would just groove an R&B number like there was no tomorrow! It really shows the musical range he had and boggles the mind. I would recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical greatness.

  • Portrait of Jaco

  • Protrait of Jaco
    author: Kevin Roney

This is the best, accurate, ligitimate, detailed anthology of Jaco. I've really enjoyed it. It brings to life the musical history of Jaco in the most natural way and is a credit to Bob Bobbing in his labour to produce it. Thank you for this valuable addition to my Jaco collection.

    very nice...

  • author: jeff pokriefka

this is a nice perspective of his early works. I was surprised with the interviews before the songs. It added a unique insight to what the musicians who were able to play with him thought. I am a Jacophile and found it to an honest and enjoyable cd that I would recommend to anyone who is a hardcore fan looking for that different view. Thumbs up!!

  • there are no words...just jaco
    author: chris gray fan/bassist

The handful of people complaining that the audio commentary ruined this masterpiece absolutely missed the point. I bought this disc FOR the audio commentary. I wanted more than anything to listen to stories about the man from the people who first knew him and were around in the early years prior to the 76 release of 'Jaco'. These stories are themselves lyrical gems about the man who should be cannonized as 'he who changed it all'. It's never been the same since and never will. Jaco IS bass. Of course the music is phenomenal, how could it not be? It's Jaco for shit's sake!!! You CAN hear the tunes behind the dialogue and the raw nature of the recordings makes it all the better, as if you're inside the club watching the performance. I wouldn't change a thing about this disc. It is worth every penny and I will listen to it over and over again. Thank you, thank you, thank you...Jesus, thank you Bob. Thank you so much.

  • Incredible!!

  • the hearly years
    author: Riccardo Pizzo
  • Worth 10 times the price!
    author: Philip J. Schneider

The interviews and commentary were totally amazing! The recollections and stories from those folks lucky enough to have known him personally are invaluable. Wished there could have been more! Outstanding in every respect - superlatives just fail me here. Wish I could have given it more stars. Truly inspirational...brings tears to my eyes.

  • way too much talking
    author: Robert Wade Cottingham

interesting document, way too much talking, I LOVE jaco's music but every track on this thing, or so it seems, has lots of talking. I came This Close to sending it back. Keeping it as a collector's item kind of thing, but doubt I will listen to it again.

  • A Must Have For Fans of Good Music

    author: Miguel Maldonado
  • Unbelievable music spoiled by great comments over-dubbed on it.
    author: Gaël Fajeau (from France)

Miraculous legacy! The music is marvelous as a testimony, and the audio comments as well, but why did they mix both of 'em on the same tracks? That's the only bad point about it: I feel just like one of my dreams is turning into a nightmare: Can you picture yourself allowed to go back in time and enjoy the incredible pleasure to listen to some marvelous and original Jaco-stuff, but suddenly, the music is faded-away to let somebody share is memories about the guy, and you just can't tell him: "Man, I'm just dying to hear what you gotta say, but can't you just shut your fuckin' mouth until the song is over?" These beautiful comments just kill this beautiful music, and that's a pity!!! Anyway, the whole cd box-set is just indispensable to any Jaco fan! Thank you, Bob Bobbing to bring these unbelievable jewels to light. Gaël

  • Buy it!! Just buy it!!

If you're a Jaco fan of any kind, you need to get this into your collection! We all know the influence Jaco had on jazz and the electric bass starting with his 1976 debut album. This CD let's you hear how his unique sound and outstanding chops developed. Hearing the earliest recordings of Jaco, leading up to that debut album, is a thrill that every musician should experience.

  • I Love CD Baby!
    author: Karen

Wow. Intense, sad, poignant and brilliant all at once! I would recommend this CD set to anyone, music lover or not. It's a great portrait of a great bass player. I wish he were still here. Actually, he is. You can hear a little Jaco in the ones that followed him.

  • What its all about
    author: natural productions

CD Baby delivery real fast. This Jaco CD is what it's all about. People on MyTube see Victor Wlotten and say Jaco's not as good. They do not understand that there would not be these guys without Jaco. This CD gets down to the roots of what made Jaco great and the things that make musicians admired him across the boards, He is original and all the rest are copies. He developed his shit from life and the road, fusing it in his soul. This is not a calculated berklee grad product but a special one of a kind musician and you get it from these CDs ....great job

  • Excellent
    author: Heman

CD arrived in perfect condition, about one and a half week after purchase internationally. It's a pleasure to listen to the many stories of all people, and ofcourse hear pices of Jaco himself playing. Gives you a broader view of Jaco as a person. I completely loved the songe of Jaco and the CCRiders. Especially Amelia and the beginning of 'Do you like the sound of the Music'. You can find lots of his licks spread over the 2CD's, and how some of his songs came into being. It's definately the best bass-cd I've ever owned; a must-have for Jaco fans!

  • A great gift!!!
    author: Catherine

It was for my brother who's a bass player... AWESOME, EXCELLENT, the perfect gift!

  • Jaco began changing the world at an early age!
    author: Rafiell

Seriously, if you are a bass player and you understand that what you know and hear and probably play has been influenced by the genius that was Jaco -get this set. If you just love the altered state that a good bass line can put you in - get this set if only to understand one of it's most important genesis, and geniuses.

  • Very much needed
    author: Mike Harmon

I really looked forward to this cd, and was not at all dissapointed when I received it. These tracks really solidified the kind of sound I thought Jaco had in the early years, and really REALLY represented his grooving abilities well. Thank you!

  • Unique and great value
    author: miles morimoto

I bought this for my son and he loves it. He's been transcribing the songs and listens to the interviews with the various artist commenting on Jaco. The CD is more expensive then others, but it's worth it as there are 2 CDs and a great picture book. Very unique interviews and recordings.

  • AWESOME...A MUST FOR ALL BASSIST!!!

    author: JR

This CD set is awesome. I have always wondered about Jaco's eary years, how he sounded with Las Olas Brass and Wayne Cochran. I felt like I was listing in on a pert of history. Jaco was truly a genius. You feel like a fly on the wall listening to a lot of the cd's. Definatly two snaps up!

  • 2 disc set takes you back and places you on the scene!!!
    author: glen

I love everything about this release. The way the music, commentaries, and the booklet place you right where it all began and sends you on a trip thru Jaco's life. I cannot imagine having it any other way. I've been inspired by his music for decades. Mary, I was touched by the ending. Absolutely love it!

  • A Must Have
    author: Chris B.

Every Jacophile should own this! Some fantastic stuff from Jaco's early years and an inside look from the greats that knew and played with him, as well as a behind the scenes look from the man himself. Hearing Joe Zawinul, Pat Metheny and Herbie Hancock talk of Jaco with such affection with the blend of his great music was so inspiring and sad simultanouesly to know of this amazing genius whose life was so short-lived. Just hearing Mr. Zawinul talk about how he met Jaco made me get a little teary-eyed. It also comes with an amazing booklet about Jaco's life and pics of his early years. A must have!

  • Excellent
    author: Eric Carter

    Stunning. Simply Stunning!

  • Fantastic!
    author: E.S

Before I bought this landmark release, I had all of Jaco's official albums and thought I knew his music and where he was coming from. I was wrong... After having listened to the two cd's and the accompanying booklet dozens of times, I know feel that a whole new universe has been opened to me as a Jaco-fan. Tons of never-heard-before music and interviews with people that stood close to Jaco makes this a fascinating, exciting, touching and unbelievable journey through Jaco's early years. Any fan of Jaco's music or great music in general will find themselves deeply touched by this release, and it stands as the ultimate storyteller of Jaco's life.

  • The tribute to the MAN and the collection of memories...GREAT!
    author: Ferruccio M. Sbarbaro

What's great about this work is that all the sensations, feelings, colors, sounds of the time, of the gigs, of whatever is there, are truly a part of a life that has been lived by everybody. By everybody who loves, or loved, LIFE itself.

  • The CD and booklet are absolutely magnificent
    author: Urban Nilsson

Jacos music has captured me since I bought Black Market back in 1976. I appreciated the book and pictures a lot. This collection of the early period of Jaco is incredibly interesting and illustrates the width of his talent. It is a complement to all the albums and gives sort of a time axis to the different events. Superb!

  • The 2 disc set is just awaesome!
    author: Eric Reed

The 2 disc biography quality and personal interviews were enlightening!

    author: Gregory Pastorius

Portrait of Jaco - A Masterpiece Of 21st Century Art!

  • a must have for every Jaco fan
    author: steve smith

I was so happy to first hear of Bob Bobbing and that he was close friend of Jocko's. He must have been to have put together such a fine collection of Jocko's recordings with the upmost care and preservation. The CD is wonderful in setting the stage and time for Jocko's development as a musician. One can really hear it, and the editorials and interviews with all the right people from this era. From listening to this CD i almost feel to be in Jocko's circle. I can't thank you enough for this type of enrichment.

  • a true work of the spirit - Bob got it right: Jaco's real legacy
    author: Tom Coerver

This is what I wanted - it fills in the gaps from the existing biographies and focuses on the positive aspect of Jaco's innovations and influences instead of the lurid stories of mental illness that sap your spirit with tragedy. A true celebration of the spark that made Jaco a a name recognized across the whole 'round world.

  • You have THE BEST order confirmations!!!!! Order shipped on time!
    author: Nick's mom

I ordered this CD for my son, I will have him write a review, although I must say that he was VERY happy to recieve this CD - so it MUST be good!!! I am most impressed with the way you handle your orders! Almost wet my pants when I read my confirmation! And also with the wording on the packing slip!!!! You're A-One in MY book, if only for the order confirmations! VERY refreshing!!!

  • Brilliant view of Jaco's early work
    author: Steve Djurovich

This CD is an absolute must have for Jaco fans, bass players, and people in general who are interested in the development of genius for that is truly what Jaco was. As someone who's been 'fan' of Jaco for many years, and a pro bass player, it was absolutely fantastic to hear this because it brings his early life to life! Until now we were only aware that he had played with Woodchuck, Tommy Strand, Wayne Cochran, etc, but never knew what it sounded like. Now we know. This is the musical history of one of THE most important figures in contemporary music and as such is priceless. Bob Bobbing, we owe you a huge debt of thanks. Cheers!

  • A Must Have for any Jaco fan or any Bass fan
    author: Curt

This CD is authentic from the people who were there with Jaco during the years 1968-1978. I learned from this CD how Jaco developed musically in ways that I have not learned from any other source. This CD has many priceless songs never heard on CD before. I appeciate the commentary by various musicians although I also wish the commentary was not on top of the songs in some cases. This is a one of a kind, must have CD for any Jaco fan or any bass fan.

  • Inspire's me
    author: Leon

this is great direction for all true musicians

  • A must for Jaco Fanatics--a fine sampling of his early work
    author: Greg B.

First and foremost, the packaging of this 2CD set is amazing. For a little of $30 bucks, it has the look and feel of a more expensive box set. The purchase experience by CDBaby is very professional(love the Paypal option) and the charming, quirky confirmation emails are a pleasure. Now, to the content of the CD's -- truly amazing. To me, his very early stuff with Woodchuck is hot, however it is the Peter Graves Orchestra stuff in particular that is the standout and really cooks. Nobody but Jaco can hit 16th like that with flair and finesse and these tracks are the shape of Jaco bass to come (please Holiday Park/CD Baby -- release complete Woodchuck, Peter Graves Orch. and CC Rider performances on subsequent CD's). The only thing that would make this CD Set superlative is more complete liner notes -- like sessionography (musicians, dates, etc) that die hard fans love and can be found in the recent Columbia Miles Davis Box sets, for example. Also, if they could make the interviews portions of this cd set with their own seperate tracks leaving the subsequent music tracks by themselves, I think it would make the experience a little better. Thank you for this indispensable set!

  • in word... killer
    author: matt murphy

Its amazing to hear the progress of jaco, from a bass player to nearly a god!! A must for every Jaco fan. Great packaging as well informative interviews and oh yeah JACO!!!! Save your pennies for this one kids. My personal favs are the wayne cochrane tracks. Again, A MUST for Jaco fans.

  • Quality
    author: Martin Enty

Jaco was THE man, I love this insight. It adds to the experience in my view. It does his legacy the world of good and I bet it was really hard work to get it all together, so credit to Bob and the team. Thanks for sharing it...absolute quality.

  • the best
    author: JEFF LAWRENCE

jaco was the best bass player that ever lived and i jeff lawrence am the best guitarist that ever lived and i hope the money for this cd is going to his children cause if not it is a travesty and jaco would not have wanted some of these songs released

  • The best insight into Jaco yet!
    author: Danny Colomby

The music,as always speaks for itself, eternally amazing! I especially savoured the narrative clips from those close to Jaco. To me this adds a 'between the lines' view of Jaco's process. This CD is an absolute GEM for the Jaco enthusiast!

  • The early years...
    author: Jim Guinan

Right after he joined Weather Report, I heard a cassette tape that was recorded during Jaco's "early years". I think some of it was from when he played with Wayne Cochran's band and it was GREAT. I always wanted to here more from that time so THANKS for "Portrait of Jaco". I was waiting to possibly hear somthing from his earliest recordings on "Portrait of Jaco" that didn't have that Jaco sound and groove but never did. He always had it. A true and orginal voice in music. He didn't just play, he sang! God bless you Jaco, wherever you are.

  • Exceptional cd!
    author: Will Yager

This cd is great and I would highly recommend it to any musician, bassist, or anyone alike! If you haven't ordered it yet, do it now!

  • A must for anyone with 'ears'!
    author: Sam Upton

Portrait Of Jaco is probably on of the most encompassing box- sets I have ever seen or heard. Being a musician myself, I have always dreamed of a record that would have interviews of the players on the album itself, so that I could hear first hand their thoughts on the music. POJ made these dreams come true. I think that producer Bob Bobbing has set the standard for any audio biography. I want to thank him for his true dedication in preserving the fingerprint of music’s most influential bass players of all time. Jaco is a legend, and this record takes you into his mind, his home, his impetuous for his sound…this all blew my mind! And how about the recordings of Jaco with Wayne Cochran and The C.C Riders…Holy shit!!! Also, to actually hear Jaco tear around the drum-kit was so powerful. Not only that, but listening to Herbie, Joni, Pat Metheny, Ira, and Joe Zawinul rave at length about Jaco’s contributions to their sound was really insightful. This record is a must for any musician of any age, of any genre, on any instrument, in any style! Thank you Bob for sticking to your vision! It is truly a sensational accomplishment!

  • Great audio documentary.....music obsured by commentary
    author: Sean

I wanted to be able to give this collection a rating of 5 stars, unfortunately I can't. I really was expecting this to be about the music and only the music. The commentary that is overlayed on most of the songs, to me, detracts from the listening experience. Having read Bill Milkowski's book on Jaco and just about anything that I've ever gotten my hands on, I was aware of many of the tales and anecdotes that are part of the commentary. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to have the music. I just wish that the music and the commentary would have been seperate from each other.

  • You could not ask for a better Jaco set!!!
    author: Matt

This may be the closest we can get to the man himself.A truly remarkable cd. The music, book, pictures, stories and interviews could not be any more insightful and inspirational. This truly is a must have for all Jaco fans and a wise investment for any aspiring bassists.Thank you Bob for getting this out there for the world to hear.

  • The Box Set is a Must Have for any true Music Lover. Excellent!

this was a christmas gift for my husband, a bass player who absolutely idolizes jaco. he loves the cd, can't get enough of it or of jaco. he said it just re-emphasizes how amazing his work truly was and continues to be. how the music just flowed from him. what a talent. what a tragedy to have lost him so young. he had the experience of a lifetime to meet him in a club that his band was playing in NYC. michael pointed him out when he unconspicuously walked through the door. of course, jaco played his band and gave some impromptu suggestions about the pickups which michael never forgot. Jaco, we love you. You are a true inspiration, a once in a lifetime. you live on.....The CD is excellent!!!

  • A fine line between inspiration and desparation
    author: Tim Winter

Being a bass player, one is always confronted with ones own limitations and desires to transcend barriers. After hearing this cd, I constantly went back and forth between wanting to ebay all of my gear and practicing more diligently. So far, practicing is winning out. This cd gives a chance to see a musician away from the instrument as well as performing "on the way up". I find it inspirational to hear young Jaco "not so perfect" grow up to be the icon that he is within two hours. I had mentioned to my wife, who was brilliant enough to give this set to me, that I wished his life story could be made into a movie. It would make quite a brilliant story on film. I was surprised to notice on the back page of the booklet, that Peter Weiss is working on a screenplay. That would be cool. I could go on and on and on, but all that needs to be said is that I am choosing inspiration right now because of this cd. Musicians and non-musicians would find this an interesting biography. CD baby did a great job!! Made us feel like royalty the way they described the parade that celebrated as they took this cd to the post office and saw it off like it was something special. And, boy howdy, was it ever!!

  • Wonderful, amazing, long overdue, thanks, great perspective, I miss Jaco
    author: Shawn Helsel

Wow. I'm freakin' out. If you're a Jaco fan, This POJ compilation gives insight to so much that we've always wondered about. Things like the Tracy Pastorius commentary is just priceless. The Little Beaver tune, "I Can Dig It Baby" and his colorful story on Jaco's instant funkability, man, I crack up every time I listen to that, and Jaco's bass line wil blow you away. Stuff like the Wayne Cochran, Woodchuck, Larry Strands, and even Jack and Mary Pastorius excerpts are just amazing, historic, heartwrenching windows into a gifted world of one incredible man's loving life of music and family. I could go on but you get the idea. If you love Jaco, you have to hear all of this and let it soak into your own personal conscience of what he meant to you. It might even be difficult like it was for me because he's no longer in our immediate reality, but remember he is living through this music. Now, the other thing I have to say is that if you or any of your friends or fellow musicians are not yet tuned into Jaco, this is such a wonderful introduction to Jaco's legacy, just like his first album. I'll be ordering this for people whom I feel need to know. Cheers, Peace, etc.

  • author: Harry Scanlon

I was compelled the minute I started listening to track 1. That feeling didn't end. I finished the CD wanting more...not because I felt the CD was incomplete. I just didn't want it to end...like a really good movie! HS

  • Well worth the wait! An important Jaco audio document!
    author: Carl Morano

This is a must-have for any serious lover of music. Hopefully more Jaco will be released from the family vaults!

  • a great tribute to Jaco
    author: Andy

What a great tribute to Jaco. Nothing will bring him back or make his senseless murder anything else than the horribly sad event it was, but experiencing the content on this CD wipes away the tears for a moment and gives me a grin from ear to ear as I hear people recollect their times with him. The sassy vibrant tone, fluid melody, and especially, the percolating rhythmn he shared in all of his playing comes across loud and clear in all the manifestations throughout the years. This is probably the most personally significant CD I've ever bought for myself. Thank you Bob and thank you CD Baby!

  • Finally, Jaco in his prime!!
    author: Les Sabah

This was an e-mail I sent to Bob Bobbing that I would like to share with you:Just got Portrait on Monday and have been listening constantly at work and at home. WOW!!! You have really nailed the essence of the formative years in Jacos life. The Rider cuts are really great, as is the entire set. Those powerhouse arrangements have reawakened a lot of great memories from that one night in Nebraska when I first heard them perform. I am eagerly awaiting the release of your Rider double c.d. set and again would like to thank you for taking the time to release all of this treasure trove of Jaco music. Thanks for caring about quality.

  • Great album and a great artist! Much anticipated!
    author: Gina

My boyfriend idolises Jaco and this CD is something that I know he will always treasure. With never before heard recordings and a pictorial, this is a fantastic buy for any bass player at Christmas!!

  • Great album. I've bought it twice.
    author: Erin Jones

I first bought this album for my husband who is a bass player. He loved it, and so do I. I just bought a second copy to give to my brother-in-law for Christmas. He is also a bass player. This is such an interesting and personal compilation of music and interviews. I also loved reading what Jaco's daughter had to say about him. It really puts into perspective all of the "stories" we've heard about Jaco.

  • great document, great music!
    author: daniele gozzi

at first a was a little surprised to hear music and spoken words mixed together in the same track, but this compilation is definitely a great, invaluable document about the world's greatest electric bass-player, and the music kills! You at CD Baby did a real good job, I received the CD in Italy in just a few days, thank you so much!

  • An important sampling of a spectacular musician, composer and arranger
    author: Andrew Grieve

This is indeed a portrait of an important musician, composer and arranger. If you've heard the name "Jaco" and are interested in finding out who this creative genius was, this is a wonderful collection of music intermixed with personal recollections. If you are a serious collector of Jaco's work, this collection presents the development of the artist from the young lion jamming in Florida to his work with Weather Report and solo projects. The personal recollections shed light on the real person, rather than the Jaco legend.

  • this is a must fo any bass playa

  • A revelation; the Jaco tribute we have all been waiting for
    author: John Bolles

I first learned of this project in the September 1997 issue of Bass Player magazine. What I expected was a retrospective of basement tapes capturing the "early" Jaco. This collection does that and so much more. I thought I knew a lot about Jaco, but this package is a revelation. It will absolutely blow you away. And in my opinion, the spoken word reflections add a great deal to the project. A most fitting tribute to this astounding musician.

  • Amazing to hear genius in the rough
    author: Mike Todd

This CD shows Jaco in his formative years. It's a must have for any Jaco fan. Hearing the Wayne Cochran stuff makes me want to hear more from this period of Jaco's playing. It seemed he had all the jazz chops with an even beefier R and B thing going on in the early 70s.

  • A great look into jacos early playing career
    author: Clark Petersen

this double cd set was a great look into alot of what jaco was made up of musically..it goes through alot of the backround of where he got his sound and ideas..definitly worth a listen

  • Jaco Lives!

The C.D. gives the listener an incredible look in to Jaco's life, and how he was able to impact so many of his peers. Having every disc I could find, it was a pleasant surprise to hear these unknown tracks and the words of so many of Jaco's close friends. Thank you!

What happened to your interview of Rich Franks, Jacos first drummer? Did that not qualify as Jacos early years??

  • author: Steve Black

Jaco lives! This is a must for all Jaco fans, fans of the bass, jazz and popular music in general. With memorable and moving anecdotes and musical treats, the truth of Jaco's genius and originality shines through. There may be better examples of Jaco's musical interactions in the general discography. However, this helps to pinpoint all those wonderful moments. A truly inspiring piece. What we need now is the next part and then a documentary video please!?

  • An invaluable insight into the genius of Jaco
    author: Glenn M.

this is a truly important audio documentary to the life and music of Jaco Pastorius. Interesting, insightful and inspirational to any musician, bass player or Jaco fan.

  • No bass player should be without this!
    author: Johnny Hodges

Incredible insight of THE bass player of our era. Not just the tunes, but the man, the player and his comrades. Every bassist should own a copy,it's a link with a true master.

Just waiting for the next one and to anyone who's reading...JUST BUY IT !!

  • A must have for the Jaco fan
    author: J.E. Molina

This biographical evaluation of Jaco Pastorius career and musical legacy is carefully analysed by serious musical authorities. Those who live and played with Pastorius provide an insightful portrayal of the man and the musical roots that gave way to the birth of "the best bass player that ever lived". It is a must have for those who collect Jaco's musical treasures, but this time a piece of material that has significant historical and emotional value.

  • More than just a collection...
    author: Chris Plummer

At first, I was put off a little by the price. I thought it was a little exploitive. But, when I got the CD, my complaint quickly went away. This is much more than a compilation of Jaco's music. This is an audio documentary.. The commentary over the music from people who were there, commenting over the music really brings it back home and puts it all in perspective. And the booklet.. hey.. what can say??? An excellent must have for fans of the low end.. Any bass player, no matter what style of music, that can't grab anything from Jaco's legacy shouldn't be playing bass.

  • An emotional & compulsive collaboration of Jacos early years
    author: David James Smith (U.K)

A wonderful piece of work that has been worth the wait. Conratulations & thanks to Bob Bobbing for his commitment. It'll make you smile, laugh outloud & cry. A must have to any musician, who thought they knew JACO.

  • Most Excellent!!! Ya Gotta Get This One!!!!!!!!
    author: MIke Haines

Bob, you have outdone yourself!! This package is most EXCELLENT!! It shows a personal side to Jaco that has not yet been shown!! Lots of cool, never before heard material. I can't wait for the next set from 1979 on......(Please, HURRY!!!!)

  • author: Gospel

Great cd, a must... nothing else to say

  • A very interesting look at a developing master.
    author: John F. Gran

This is the "missing link" in the Jaco library. You must have this album if you are into Jaco. It's a fascinating study of the formative years of the World's Greatest Bass Player. Buy it, you will not regret it.

  • Awesome, not only for bassists but for everyone
    author: Robert van der Poel

I´ll keep this short. This is the best. Not only for a bassplayer like me, but for every musician and musiclover. Something to cherisch and cannot be missed in your cd collection.

  • The Greatest Spoken Word CD To Come Along
    author: Wayne Dent

To describe the stories intimately told to Jaco's fans by Joni Mitchell, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, his brothers and first love, Tracy, to name a few, as lame, is nothing short of disrespect in its' highest (or lowest) form, toward the tellers. Each story and tribute took time away from their busy lives and were offered for the benefit of Jaco's fans, motivated by love for Jaco. Whatever agenda one might have in discounting Portrait of Jaco, be assured it is best ignored. Get Portrait of Jaco and see for yourselves. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

  • great music. lame spoken word tributes.
    author: peter hirschl

this is the real deal. fantastic tunes and fretless / fret-work by one of the greats---BUT...way too much spoken word filler which comes across as shlocky and lame. no one will want to listen to these spoken tributes more than once (or even once).

  • terrific!!!
    author: Lorenzo

Finally something really new and really fresh! I own a lot of CDs by Jaco and this really stands out! Lots of previously unheard things. A must for every bassist.

  • Essential listening for musicians
    author: Zauriel

Be aware that this is not a music cd in the traditional sense of the word. Although there sure is a lot of music there there is also a lot of talk. The music is always fascinating and the rap is insightful. What keeps it from getting the top score is that you can't program the cd to play only the music - after a couple of listenings I frankly don't want to hear again how Zawinul first met Jaco...

  • The untouchable!
    author: Riccardo Montori (Italy)

You Bobbing, you're the man!Anyone who loves Jaco must have this cd, it's perfect, and if Jaco could be here with us he surly like your work. Awesome one! A "must have" for all the bass players. Who loves ya babe?

  • Music and packaging is superb but commentaries are occasionally distracting.
    author: L. A. Loos

Steven Spielberg will have to alter the plot of his next Indiana Jones installment because Bob Bobbing has already uncovered this—-until now—-lost treasure! Overall, I’m pleased with this 2-CD set and I concur with the assessment of other reviewers. The packaging is superb and the music . . . well, what can I say that hasn’t already been said. Jaco’s music speaks for itself: LOUD and CLEAR! However, while I appreciate the insightful commentaries, I would have preferred to hear fewer comments and MORE music. At $40.00, a third CD with comments and reminisces could have been easily added to the package—-and at, arguably, a negligible expense—-leaving two discs of uninterrupted music. This minor objection aside, Portrait of Jaco - The Early Years is truly a fitting tribute to the Jaco legacy and a must-have for serious admirers of Jaco’s music. Thank you!

  • Not to be missed by any bass student
    author: David Payne

Absolutely love this set! If you are a serious student of the bass guitar, or a fan of Jaco, you should own this set. I found it truly interesting to follow along with the set and hear just where Jaco came from with his style. I will admit that I was a little put off by the price at first, but after finally breaking into my piggy bank and ordering it, I am more than satisfied. You get a lot of information and music for the price. Now I will say that it is worth it and more. The book that comes with the discs is very informative and the pictures are excellent. Hopefully there will be more to follow, and this time I won't put off buying it.

  • author: Mark Perrins

I was worried about the quality of these early recordings (some of them made on a sony walkman) but was pleasantly surprised by the clarity and full range tone. The project would have been better still if the speaking tracks were separated from the music tracks so you could just listen to the music after you were familiar with the rest. A great 'must have' resource for all bass players and fans of Jaco. But frustrating when you just want to listen to some music.

  • An important and necessary document of the development of an icon
    author: Tony Renaud

My initial impression of "Portrait of Jaco" was one of awe and appreciation of the quantity and quality of the stories, remembrances, musical excerpts, photographs, and previously unknown facts the project is built from. After listening to and enjoying "Portrait of Jaco" over the last few months, I can only repeat my previous remarks with even more conviction. The passage of time has made me feel that this work is one of the finest efforts to document the early years of any artist in any discipline in recent memory. As a self-confessed "Jaco-phile" for years, there were still endless facts, photos, and recollections of Jaco's early years I had never known, seen or heard about. This point alone makes "Portrait of Jaco" a must have for Jaco fans or even those curious about the historically correct back story of how a genius develops and grows. All in all, "POJ" is a sincere, sensitive, and powerful effort that deserves the recognition and accolades it has received so far. I encourage you to experience it yourself.

  • Excellent double CD, riche de bonne musique et d'informations

This Cd is the ultimate piece for a Jaco lover!

  • If God played bass, he would sound like this
    author: Richard Palmer

I heard the tracks where he plays the Acoustic Bass, and immediately ordered the CD. Brilliant progression through Jaco history, and a reaffirmation for me of his absolute other worldliness, his genius. This CD shows he was the bass guitar in human form. His music shows he was music in human form. Buy it.

  • Superb!
    author: Emily Pereira

I bought the cd as a present for my boyfriend, but after listening to it I was hooked! I now have to agree with him that Jaco indeed was the greatest bass player of all time.

  • This is one of the most fascinating CDs i ever heard
    author: Tobi Gabele

Listening to this CD while reading the fantastic booklet is a truly great experience. Text, photos, narratives and incredible tapes of jacos bass playing take you on a journey from the pre-pastorius era to the heights of the first solo album. Just to name a few musical details: For example, you can hear how the funky fingerstyle licks were improved with the left hand damping technique over time. How Jaco develops his soloing style from the very beginning. It also helps to imagine how the free and furious style heard on the bley/ditmas/metheny/pastorius LP was developed after intense bebop and modal jazz studies and numerous sessions in the hollywood appartement. You can also hear Jaco producing a first class upright sound on an acoustic frettles bass guitar (i always thought they were doomed to sound like crap). What is even more stunning than the musical details, is the atmosphere captured in this document which lets you almost dive into the scene. In short, this superb CD adds a new dimension to the music and perception of Jaco Pastorius and is a must have for anyone interested in contemporary bass and jazz-related music. Thanks to Bob Bobbing and to all who contributed to this uniqe project!!

  • Amazing!!!
    author: Zanchie Whitehead

This CD was well worth the wait. I listened to it twice in a week! Bob Bobbing did an amazing job documenting these early years of Jaco Pastorius' growth and development to emerge as 'the world's greatest bass player' and change the musical landscape!

  • truly exceptional
    author: peter ivanyi

I just got the Early Years box-set and I am shocked and moved and amazed. I've been a Jaco fan for as far as I can remember and this compilation of his early works is not just exceptional among the ever released Jaco works, but I have never even seen a compilation so esthetical, professional and most of all in a musical sense brilliantly put together. When listening to all of this really original early music of Jaco and the commentaries and reading that wonderful booklet I was really moved - by the music and the exceptional way this memoir was put together. It really gave insights to the development of one of the greatest artist of the 20th century. Jaco would be proud. Congratulations to you Bob Bobbing and thank you (and Jaco) for these moments.

  • The Ellington of my generation.
    author: DC Pryor

Jaco's work goes beyond linear categorization. He brought Robert Johnson, Bird, Trane, Elvis, Beatles, James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone and Bach to the party and they all flowed and gladly got along. There will never be another Satchmo, Sinatra, Elvis or Jaco. DC Pryor www.swrecords.net

  • Incredible ! An amazing history of a true musical innovator . .
    author: Eric Webster

Well, Bob definitely gets to go and hang with Jaco in another life for putting together, and allowing people to hear, this incredible compilation of early recordings. Rarely does a person have the insight to record this sort of material while it's happening, and while an artist is developing their talents, and in this case, their truly remarkable talents . . . I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to have this insight into this phenomenally gifted person. I really feel like I have known Jaco a little bit after hearing this great package . . . Superbly produced with great pictures and a wonderful 80 page booklet of historical comments and thoughts, on a track by track basis with a variety of people who appear on these recordings along with Jaco. Thank you Bob Bobbing.

  • Excellent!!
    author: Go

I always doubt about "the early years" CDs. But I was wrong. Disc TWO is, of course, great. And disc ONE is very smartly compiled, and shows us his road toward Jaco(with Paul Bley), Jaco Pastorius, Bright Size Life. 5 stars, out of doubt.

  • More Jaco, Less Bobbing...
    author: Joe Bonito

The recordings are very insightful regarding Jaco's development as a musician. The inteviews are at best irrelevant, and at worst distracting. The listenter shouldn't be forced to endure the interviews in order to get to the music. The booklet accompanying the CD has plenty of information regarding the origin of the recordinds and any special details for a particular track. Remember, it's about the wonderful music the man made, and that music is perfectly capable of speaking for itself.

  • A unique and valuable insight into a revolutionary artist.
    author: David Kay

For a concept-changing musician such as Jaco, finding an evolutionary record of his development is so important to those learning from the masters of any art form. These kind of people (like Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong or Jimi Hendrix) did not spring forth out of nowhere. This CD documents one of those select few who, from their early influences, developed new conceptions that truly expanded the envelope way beyond what came before. What a fascinating saga, lovingly documented by Bob Bobbing who is truly special for his devotion. Buy this set. Now. And share it with others.

I just have to say that being influenced by Jaco for most of my professional life, when this CD came out, I had to have it. It was like reading a book! I can't say enough how professional a job was done producing this Tribute to "The Worlds Greates Bass Player".............he truly was. I actually had tears in my eys more than a few times as his life played out over the speakers. Thank you to his family for putting together such a wonderful collection. It will remain my all time favorite album for many, many years.

  • and furthermore...

This album has not been out of my CD player since it arrived. I never realized to what extent he was so ahead of his time before. A couple of years ago Zawinul toured here in Australia and I had the honour to chat with him and Victor Bailey. They are both still in awe of Jaco and spoke with great affection and sincerity of him.

  • Absolutely inspirational! Just get it!! NOW!

JACO PASTORIUS: portrait of jaco - the early years - has not been out of my CD player since it arrived. Absolutely inspirational! To say he was ahead of his time is an understatement of course, but I never really realized to what extent before.

And the spoken words of Zawinul says it all.....! Bob, million thanks for a great documentation! Also, never had a CD that fast in the mailbox (3 days!) Everybody, spread the word about this CD!!!!!

  • Essential listening for all musicians
    author: Marc Reynolds

I`ve been waiting for this CD for what seems like an eternity, since I read an interview with Bob Bobbing, and to say it was worth the wait wouldn`t do it justice. This facinating insight into the development of the worlds greatest bassist is essential listening for all musicians, regardless of what instrument they play. Every track is a gem, and the inclusion of interviews with the music is a real bonus I wasn`t expecting. Bob Bobbing deserves every bit of praise for this labour of love - thank you for this truly wonderful collection of Jaco`s early work

  • The new way for the public to remember Jaco, the right way.
    author: Eric Veras

It evident that this collection was put together with the same care as a mother nursing her young. I'm so very happy to have this healthy point of view of Jaco, as oppossed to the bar room stories going around. It is truly a fitting tribute by friends. Bob Bobbing has done well.

author: STEVE (THE REAL DEAL) WARGO

TO HEAR THE EVOLUTION OF JACO PUTS THINGS ALTOGETHER FOR ME. BEING ONE YEAR OLDER THAN JACO I TO PLAYED IN R&B IN THE LATE 60"S AND EARLY 70"S. I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I HEARD JACO PLAY ON HIS SOLO RECORD AND THINKING WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO NOW? I DID LIKE ALL THE JACO FANS AND TRY TO LEARN AS MANY OF JACO TUNES I COULD AND TO THIS DAY I'M STILL WORKING ON THEM.

  • Brilliant and inspiring . Thank you Bob Bobing
    author: David J, Lis

This CD is a virtual audio documentry. It has all the ingredients to better understand the pure musical genious that made to create Jaco Pastorius for what he did in the past that still intrigues and even allures us to this day even after his death. From the early years of singing with Jaco's father, Jack and the discussions and recordings with the old Los Olas Brass, Wayne Cochran and the CC Rider's, Ira Sullivan, Little Beaver, the Peter Graves Orchestra, to Pat Metheny and Joni Mitchell and finally Weather Report. The things that each artist said about Jaco was said with so much passion from deep within the hearts and souls of everyone. And for me, it was very moving and was able to better undertand Jaco's complex personality, kindness and compassion back in the early days. Jaco is not dead, just listen to his music around you! His spirit is here and always will be. His music is here and always will be. Jaco has come and gone but for what The Worlds Greatest Bass Player did for music and especially the electric bass, will be here with us for all eternity.....Just listen!

  • Get to know the greatest bass player that ever lived
    author: April Pastorius Closson

Excellent, insightful and intimate. You can't help but smile when you hear Jaco's relatives and contemporaries reminisce about him. Nor can you help bobbing to the music when it's grooving. Thank you to everyone who put their time, energy, passion and money into this integral project.

  • You Must Have This CD!
    author: Eric Young

POJ is nothing short of a masterly compiled and edited gem of entertainment and education about one of the greatest composers, arrangers and performers of the 20th century. My only wish is that it were 4 or 5 CD's, instead of 2! Inspiring, illuminating, invigorating and engaging, this menagerie manages to remain focused, yet comprehensive. A truly magical journey along the path of genius, hard work, and true love of one's vocation, perfectly embodied by the ever inimitable and endlessly talented Jaco Pastorius - the World's Greatest Bass Player.

  • author: Cliff Erickson

Very satisfied, a must have for music aficionados. I personally consider it a "Jaco treasure" and I am very glad that it exists. This compilation was obviously a labor of love and clearly shows me that Jaco "had it" early on. I enjoyed the photo booklet as well. Now do one on Alan Holdsworth !

  • Thanx to Bob Bobbing for this rare and essential look at Jaco.

This set fills in the early years so perfectly, Bob Bobbing kept us waiting but it was worth the wait.

  • God Bless Bob Bobbing,A fitting tribute to his friend!
    author: Scott Riggi

This package is Gold! The presentation, pictures, interviews the entire package shows the love and care that was put into this tribute. A bargain for what Mr. Bobbing put into this. He has blessed all of us with this look into the development of a genius, father and friend. Bob's labor is of perfection and of the caliber of the magnatude of Jaco himself as an artist. As Jaco himself said Thank you Jesus thank you God! Scott Schenectady,NY

  • A must for Jacophiles! Beautifully done, but...
    author: Carlos Guzman

This is a wonderful way to understand Jaco. I have every single CD of his that has been available and this is amongst the most important. My only gripe, as other reviewers noted, is that the comments get in the way of the music. After listening to it a few times, you already know what they said, but you still want to come back and listen to the music over an over. It would be great if they could put out another CD with as much unpublished music as possible. We Jaco fans want it all!!! Thanks to Bob for such a great job. Patience pays!!

  • This is the closest thing to a living sculpture of the man.
    author: jason near nederland

Phenomenal. The integrity and love that were poured into the making of this CD shines through at every moment. I'd always felt that I'd been robbed of my opportunity to go see this great man play--now I just pop in my POJ CD and close my eyes. This isn't simply a musical experience--it's really Jaco's evolving conversation with those of us who care to listen. By the end of the CD, I got the feeling that Jaco was in heaven, elbowing God in the ribs and saying "Check THIS out!" Thanks, Mr. Bobbing, for the honesty. After all the polish and slick that's manufactured to enhance the appeal of modern "artists," these recordings are breath of fresh air.

  • I couldn't be more satisfied

    author: Dave C.

The CD is a welcome addition to the CD collection of any fan of Jaco or Jazz music in general. It gives a great background on Jaco's first musical influences, experiments and accomplishments. However, too much time is spent on narratives that could have been filled by more of the great music that is found on this CD.

  • A CD never to be in danger of collecting dust!

  • If you dig Jaco, you'll dig this!
    author: Rudy Membiela

For anyone that loved/loves Jaco, this completes the picture of what Jaco was doing in his formative years that lead him to become THE most influential electric bassist this side of James Jamerson. If you've read the Bill Milkowski book "JACO-The Extraordinary and Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius 'The World's Greatest Bas Player'", this CD fills in many gaps and voids, not that there were many in the book, by having first hand interviews with Jaco's family and inner circle at the time he was becoming "The World's Greatest Bass Player". Kudos to Bob Bobbing for this comprehensive collection of intimacies so that we too can make it in to that "inner circle" of Jaco's friends and family.

    author: Rob Burchuk

A phenomenal documentary that conveys Jaco's artistry and humanity through the words of childhood friends, family, collaborators and Jaco himself, all placed in the context of his musical legacy. Significantly more enriching than his musical recordings for the listener interested in his development and personhood.

  • Wonderful!
    author: Antony from Cranford, NJ

A great audio documentary on the rising star who went from being Jocko to Jaco. If you're a fan of Mr. Pastorius, you'll need this cd.

  • excellent, and worth the wait
    author: John S

After many false starts and doubtlessly sleepless nights for Bob Bobbing, these cd's are here. They are well worth the wait-talking and all. The talking in fact, is wonderful and adds to the tunes. It does really provide a "Portrait" of the magic that I felt in first hearing about, hearing, and finally seeing Jaco during the mid-70's.As for the music, a great percentage of the recordings are brand new to my ears, and the sound quality and performances are where you'd want them to be.

  • no word of mouth please just jaco's bass
    author: angelo liziero (italy)

(better no words of mouth but only jaco's bass) mean the portrait of jaco is a great opera but will be better only with the jaco music without word !!! sorry anyway thank you so mutch !!

  • like jaco there play for me
    author: angelo liziero (italy)

like jaco came at my studio/room and take my bass and play it for me !!! nobody do it like him in the world !!! music say thank you jaco and i say to !!! liz

  • Great music, skip the talking though
    author: Randy whitley

The music on these CDs is breathtakingly magnificent, but the talking gets real old quick. Jaco shines throughout. The producer is very self-promoting which is why I gave this a rating of 4. The quality of the tunes is 5+, which balances out the 3 I would have given it for the talking that interrupts the wonderful music and the afore mentioned ego ramblings and writings of the producer.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you...
    author: Paul Sips

Thank you, thank you, thank you... Words cannot even begin to express what's in stock for you on this album, standing back in awe is all we can do apart from immensely enjoying the beauty that's revealed here. Thank you, thank you, thank you...

    author: Louis Lefrancois

This is a great set - it just totally blew me away!. I'd read about Jaco's previous bands in various publications, and it's terrific that we can actually hear Jaco in his formative bass playing years. Excellent!

  • POJ is well worth Wating for!
    author: Rod Kruger

My appreciation for Jaco just keeps getting stronger. The POJ project is an incredable view of Jaco's development. I especially like the anecdotes by Jaco's musical associates. These recordings are a must have for any bass player and/or music aficionado. Thank you Bob Bobbing, Holiday Park and Jaco. This collection was well worth the wait.

  • What an inspiration!
    author: Patrick Pfeiffer

This CD is wonderful! It's great to hear the progress Jaco went through to reach the level of playing than made him Jaco. But what really comes through is his spirit. It's beyond just the music, and this CD captures it as only close friends could. Thanks to all of you!

    author: Carlo Berto

Portrait Of Jaco is finally here and it was well worth the wait. Bob Bobbing did an amazing job, through music and interviews, of bringing us closer to Jaco. Every time I listen to it, it gets better. And the pictures and insights contained in the booklet are incredible. I almost feel as if I had known Jaco. I want to publicly thank Bob Bobbing for producing this magnificent project. No Jaco fan should be without it.

  • The light, once more
    author: Rick Suchow

Those of us who were fortunate enough to experience the incredible 'light' that eminated from Jaco's presence during the earlier days of his rise to fame will get that feeling again when listening to this CD set and reading through the companion booklet (with unbelievable photos). For all others, here's a chance to find out how the course of modern electric bass was changed in the mid-seventies by one man. I had an ear-to-ear grin listening to these recordings. Thank you, Bob Bobbing, for documenting history for us all.

  • This boxed set should be in everyone's collection.
    author: Dan Smith

I listened to this whole boxed set, and can think of only one thing to say. It is this: if you want to hear the unfolding of a beautiful, supremely creative and innovative soul, buy this without delay! This boxed set should be in everyone's collection.

  • A Jaco music must have!!!
    author: Finally ... it's out!

This is the best retrospective of Jaco's formative years bar none! The quality of most of these recordings is way better than imagined and the photographs lend new insight into the atmosphere in which Jaco developed into the world’s greatest bass player. I have already listened to each CD no less than three times and I still cannot get enough … remember … I only received this CD yesterday. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who wants to expand his or her ability to play music or anyone who wants to hear the incredible growth of one of the most influential musician’s of the last quarter of the 20th century. I can go on about how great this package is, but I’d rather you buy it and find out for yourself. You won’t be disappointed! However, there are a couple issues that are a bit subjective. First is the fact that some tunes are faded early for the spoken commentary. While all of the spoken vignettes are very powerful, I find myself fast forwarding through them on repeat listenings so I can hear the music. It makes me wish that the spoken words were on a third disc so the unheard music is never interrupted. After all, Jaco’s music is the most powerful display of his greatness … it speaks for itself. The other small issue is the self-promotion throughout the package. Unbeknownst to himself, the guy that put this thing together did the world a great service by recording Jaco throughout the early years and that alone guarantees him a place in the history of Jaco’s story. His name and Sony reel-to-reel are now immortalized. Why then do we need to know anything about his Honda motorcycle? With those two gripes aside (and I’m sure I will get plenty of slack for my thoughts), I hope that this retrospective helps to step Jaco’s legacy up many notches. Just listen to his smoking solos on the Peter Graves Orchestra tracks! LOOK OUT!

  • A fantastic trip through the early years of a most important and loved artist.
    author: Harry Harbst

From Jaco’s own welcome at the opening, through his intimate vocal performance on Las Olas. You can’t help but feel lucky that Bob Bobbing took the time and effort to share these clips with each of us. Hearing a young Jocko grow into Jaco is a pleasure only a few had until now. The use of narratives by Jaco’s friends and family had me a little concerned prior to hearing POJ. I was afraid it would interfere with the music. I couldn’t have been more wrong in my worries. The clips are perfectly applied throughout the collection and are a wonderful complement to the music. Honestly without it the collection would feel rather disjointed and could be misconstrued as “just another Jaco rehash” Well this is no rehash, and I’m glad to say I haven’t been more pleased by a release in years. To sum it up… Joni remarks during the performance of Hejira that it was “as if I’d dreamed him” I know the feeling, but after hearing Portrait of Jaco… he never seemed more real.

  • Incomparable Work of Art: A Gem in Jaco's Legacy!
    author: Wayne Dent

When Jaco burst upon the scene via his first solo album, there were questions from everyone regarding Jaco's prior whereabouts. How could someone be this good and yet, virtually unheard by the masses. This CD answers the questions engendered by that album, so many years ago. Masterfully blended with the music, are personal stories, recollections, and tributes by the people who were involved with Jaco throughout his career as it evolved. This is an emotional ride which will have you laughing and crying but above all, appreciating even more, the dedication and genius of this warm and memorable person. The attendant booklet is definitely worth the purchase price, alone. The greatness of this CD cannot be captured in the space provided here so, my only encouragement is to go out of your way to get this important release.
