In his debut venture Jake Kelly reaches beyond his sideman role for country main-stream artist Gary Allan with his quirky "I Shouldn't Talk When I Drink" cd.
While jumping between musical genres (Country, Rock, moody Jazz and Grunge), the lyrical emphasis always remains the same. Some of these songs could become barroom anthems if some half-drunken (insert work title here) were to browse upon such titles as "I Hate Everybody", "I Shouldn't Talk When I Drink", and "Today Sucks" in the jukebox at his local watering hole when trying to take the edge off of a hard day's work.
But Kelly shows a tender side as well with the cleverly worded "Cupid's Little Joke," and seems unafraid to turn a phrase even if it verges on cliché.
Future cds from Kelly will reveal whether this was a one-time shot, or if he has something more to say, but there's something in this release to make this writer think the boy has something more to get off of his chest.
