notes
Jake Speed's second album, The Cincinnati Legends of Jeremiah Schmidt, marks the completion of a collaboration that's been in the works for over 50 years...even though Speed himself is only 25 years old! This collection of songs is based on the handwritten stories of a long-dead Cincinnati native named Jeremiah Schmidt. Schmidt's legends, which highlight such Cincinnati tales as the ghost of the subway, the tragedy of the 1937 flood, and the heroism of brewer Christian Moerlein, were found by Speed in a Stratford Street apartment in the winter of 2000. For three years, Speed studied Schmidt's stories, finally crafting the original legends into 16 songs. Though separated by over six decades, Schmidt and Speed have essentially co-written the songs found in this collection. They are Cincinnati's legends and Schmidt's stories; Speed merely functions as the instrument through which these stories finally get to sing.
The album is funded by the City of Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Legends of Jeremiah Schmidt
author: Tony AikenThis is a fun CD. I found myself Googling to find out if Christian Moerlein was a real person and if he was around for the 1884 flood. Jake, your note was a nice touch.
ESCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!
author: Matt In West ChesterI love these guys, there I said it. Very creative album full of great Cincy folklore. A serious bit of fun.

There's a witch in Cincinnati and now it's in Europe too
author: Markus In SwedenI'm hardly not into the American country sound but hey this record man, this will be the ONE to represent that sound in my CD shelf. When me and my European friends will discuss American Country sound I'll be glad to pick this one up. The lyrics are great. It's a great record for Ohio and Cincinnati and mirror somehow the life livin there. I RECOMMEND a buy.
Fun to listen to! I am an instant fan.
author: M KThis CD was great. The songs have clever lyrics and catchy tunes. Home town pride is inevitable after listening to these songs- but compared to the other albums, this one was my least favorite.
Enjoyed Cincinnati Theme
author: David FrymanBeing from the Greater Cincinnati area I thouroughly enjoyed these songs with historical local links.

Great cd I have Queen City Rag and The Cincinnati Legends of Jeremiah Schmidt, enjoy them both I'm from Latonia, Ky and it's great that I can find this local artist, keep up the good work Jake Speed and CD Baby for putting the locals outhere. Thanks Frank Ellman
Boot Stompin' Fun!
author: Nickgets better and better, well written catchy songs. i'm eagerly awaiting jake's next album!
A lot of fun
author: Dr. Anne's dadMy tastes in music are eclectic, but do not usually reach into bluegrass; nonetheless, I am very appreciative of my son-in-law for introducing me to this CD. Though I live near Cincinnati, the crisp vocals, fun lyrics and lively pickin' would make this a favorite even if I lived in Philadelphia.
John Hurt would be proud...
author: BartVery solid CD if you're into the ragtime/fingerpicking/country blues like that of ol' Mississippi John Hurt. Lyrically, this is very strong material, and I think it almost overshadows the great fingerpicking you'll hear.
Catchy tunes for when I can't see the band live.
author: Lisa GesenhuesI liked the catchy, historic tunes about my favorite city. Huzzah for the Red Stockings, Maggie Don't You Weep, and Cruel, Cruel World are note-perfect, and one of my favorites is Runnin' and Roamin'. Chris adds great harmony. Thank you Jake Speed and the Freddies!
