This CD marks a stepping stone in the career of Sean Jamaal. Different from his first two CDs, "Blue", an R&B CD which consists of songs Jamaal wrote himself and a live jazz CD also recorded in the Posthoornkerk. This CD Celebrates one of the most famous jazz legends of all times...Billie Holiday!
There have been countless articles and books written about her life (1915-1959) and her music. Billie Holiday was one of the first to capitalize on her life's story by writing her contro-versial autobiography "Lady sings the blues ", which was published and well received in the early 50s. Her book (as controversial as her life) was quickly followed by sold out concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall and an album of the same title. With a career that spanned more than 20 years, Billie Holiday is still one of the top ten selling jazz artists in the world today. This CD pays homage to Lady Day, one of the greatest legends of all times. Sean Jamaal sings some of her most popular and most recorded songs as well as songs she wrote herself and songs most connected with her legacy. Sean Jamaal brings the selected songs back to life with his smooth and silky baritone voice. Sean Jamaal interprets the songs in his own style and with much emotion, not trying to copy what can't be copied. Sean Jamaal is accompanied by Dirk Balthaus on piano, Sven Schuster on bass, Steve Altenberg on drums and Simon Rigter on sax.
This CD was recorded before a live audience on the 6th of May 2001 at the Posthoornkerk in Amsterdam, by Mirasound.
