Album Notes
The Dutch-American Sean Jamaal is one of Holland's best kept secrets. Born and raised in Chicago, Sean started singing and receiving awards at a young age. Sean frequently performs in the Netherlands where he is based and tours in many countries both in and out of Europe.

Sean Jamaal, an all-round performer, sings blues, gospel and most of all jazz. Sean has been named a top soloist with the Amsterdam Swing Society. At the Spirit of Jazz in Düsseldorf, Germany, Sean received acclamation for his "powerful virtuoso voice, which exudes the essence of blues, gospel and jazz." In the Norwegian Lillestrom, Sean impressed audiences with his extensive repertoire and his "...interpretations displaying remarkable musicality. "

Sean Jamaal is one of the Netherlands' most sought after singers and appears often on national television. Sean has performed on Gordon Doorgedraaid, Paul de Leeuw's television program "Laat de Leeuw", Barend & van Dorp and many others. Sean Jamaal has sung for André Hazes on several occasions and was seen and heard at the wedding of Prince Bernard jr. His voice can also be heard in radio jingles and in commercials for German television.

This CD marks a stepping stone in the career of Sean Jamaal. Different from his first two CDs, "Blue", an R&B CD which consists of songs Jamaal wrote himself and a live jazz CD also recorded in the Posthoornkerk. This CD Celebrates one of the most famous jazz legends of all times...Billie Holiday!

There have been countless articles and books written about her life (1915-1959) and her music. Billie Holiday was one of the first to capitalize on her life's story by writing her contro-versial autobiography "Lady sings the blues ", which was published and well received in the early 50s. Her book (as controversial as her life) was quickly followed by sold out concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall and an album of the same title. With a career that spanned more than 20 years, Billie Holiday is still one of the top ten selling jazz artists in the world today. This CD pays homage to Lady Day, one of the greatest legends of all times. Sean Jamaal sings some of her most popular and most recorded songs as well as songs she wrote herself and songs most connected with her legacy. Sean Jamaal brings the selected songs back to life with his smooth and silky baritone voice. Sean Jamaal interprets the songs in his own style and with much emotion, not trying to copy what can't be copied. Sean Jamaal is accompanied by Dirk Balthaus on piano, Sven Schuster on bass, Steve Altenberg on drums and Simon Rigter on sax.

This CD was recorded before a live audience on the 6th of May 2001 at the Posthoornkerk in Amsterdam, by Mirasound.

Manfred Scheffner

Great album, but the reason to buy this CD is missing ! \'Willow Weep For Me\' is in the track-list (10 titles), but not on the CD (8 titles)
The present titles are fine !
