Review by Justin Kendall of Cityview:

A classically trained pianist, Stark incorporates his experience into his enchanting keyboard playing. His beats are mesmerizing, diggable and danceable.

The entire album flows in a way that makes it easy to get lost in the thumping, pulsating sound. The appropriately titled opening track "Enlightenment" is like an awakening of the mind to something profound.

"Bach 2001" is a sample of the spacey work the track's namesake would probably be creating if he weren't six feet down and pushing up daisies. The rapid beats are bounce inducing.

"Mirage" is exotic, a little erotic and utterly hypnotic. The beat is a dark, haunting and enticing like siren's song.

Most of the tracks (see "Cosmic Glitch", "SOL") have a creepy futuristic sound. It surrounds you and is a little cold, but far from sterile.

One doesn't need to know how to dance with glow sticks to appreciate Stark's work. It's pure and otherworldly. Strobe light not included.

Transcendence

I started listening to elecronica in the late 60's and I'd say that James D. Stack is one of the best artists to come around in a long time. Transcendence blew me away. Now that I am aware of him, I'll be picking up the rest of his work very quickly.

Every song on Transcendence is a keeper!

I originally heard about Mr. Stark through my friend (Who I credit for getting me into bands like Depeche Mode and many EBM and other like DM bands), who heard about him through his brother. As most of the electronic bands I have listened so far are pretty much all Industrial like Assemblage 23 and Covenant, I had really no clue how the whole album from start to finish would sound like. Yes, I did listen to the samples on here. But not until I heard it, I didn't know how good this album actually is. As it says in the booklet he put his heart into this album. Even though I still need to learn more electronic singers/bands/composers, this album not just being one of the best self-titled/independent albums ever, is also probably one of the best electronic/instrumental. Hopefully Mr. Stark will do another instrumental album soon. As for other albums to look into if you like this one, is his two others from 2004 and 2006 and his Dying Beauty Single. So if you like electronic music, do yourself a favor and buy this as it's only $9.99. Be on the lookout for my other three reviews for Mr. Stark and more for other great artists to come soon.
