Album Notes

Singer-Songwriter James Harper is an accomplished finger-style guitarist whose playing reflects his interest in folk, rock, classical, and celtic music. Listening to his songs is like overhearing strangers while waiting for a train- some stories are magical, some so unlikely that they just might be real, and some make you think they've come from your own heart. Influences range from Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor, Tom Waits, and other singer-songwriters to bands like The Moody Blues, Steeleye Span, and The Chieftains. Respected for his song crafting, several of the pieces on his debut CD titled All Come Home are featured in a university storytelling graduate class as examples of narrative in song form. His years of knocking around the country performing and doing many kinds of work are balanced with a scholar's curiosity to forge the artist he is today-- a literate and powerful storyteller. His layered works will introduce you to your own everyday world, but with a fresh shimmer of mystery.

Humans, I believe, are able to learn and teach the best of themselves through stories. James Harper’s music brings you such powerful stories woven through your heart strings that you feel it is you or at least as you have sometimes imagined yourself that is the player in the tale. Everyone who has enjoyed a good book will want to smile as they hear, “Come Tell Me a Story”, or if you feel connected to the earth and want inspiration to help protect it for our children’s children then listen to “Rippling Water.” I feel a personal connection with each of these songs in, “All Come Home” and I believe you will as well. Sit down with a glass, in a quiet place, and enjoy this Harper singing tales in the best of the tradition of Joseph Campbell and Harry Chapin.

This album was recommended to me, so I gave it a listen having no expectations; however, I was more than pleasantly surprised as each track was better than the last. This CD is definitely worth the investment. I am not a big music person, but I found this CD totally enjoyable. I hope to hear more from James Harper in the future!

An excellent CD crafted to tell wonderful stories

When I first heard this CD, I loved it immediately. Having heard some of the songs previously, such as Rippling Water and The King of Maine, I knew that this CD would be good. However, when I heard some of the songs for the first time, I was blown away. Daedalus, Icarus, and Sky is an extraordinary piece that explores the many facets of the human mind. Graduation Day is another that makes the listener consider the past and the future, reminiscing and moving on. These songs have a wonderful, natural feel to them which makes listening to the album a sheer joy. I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys Americana, folk music, or great story-telling.
