First let me say this record was a helluva lot of fun to make.
It was recorded in a very short, and intense, period
of time using the most fundamental of recording techniques. We used microphones to record real musicians
making actual sounds on musical instruments...and other things. We even invented a thing or two, kind of a "make it up as you go along" approach...very creative atmosphere. Combine that with the calibre of musicians I got lucky enough to work with, and the degree of commitment and participation each of them brought to the
sessions and wow!...something wonderful happened.

About the songs...Each and every one means something very special to me...I chose to record these in particular for that very reason, and hopefully, that'll be apparent when you listen...Thanks for taking a look,

    James Hurley writes and performs some of the most intelligent and heartfelt songs around - with such a smooth and soulful style. I first encountered James's music live at Kulak's Woodshed in North Hollywood, California (www.kulakswoodshed.com) and the same joy and intelligence and soul in his live performances comes through in his work on this album. Not only do words fail me in feebly attempting to descibe the beauty and depth of his music, but also James in one of the nicest and thoughtful people I've met.     For some reason, the ambiance of this album is what stays with me the most. It gives you the feeling of a cool drive down the western coast, nights in the mountians, misty mornings or (ironically an often venue for James) a hip coffee shop. Although it is appropriate for any occasion. James' great imagination is definately on display. The Sun & The Moon is ever-filled with James' flourishes of atmosphere and story. I think James' guitar mastery has been spoken for but the key highlight on this album is his acoustic guitar work but most of all, emphasis (as usual) on the songs. And great, finely-tuned pieces they indeed are. We get off to a great start from the delightful opening track, to the... well, dreamy "In my Dreams." I personally adore "One Man Woman" (I challenge you not start tapping or snapping) it is irrisitable. I cannot comment on "One Fine Day" since the spouting of such positive sentiments would cause my bitter little head to implode. Okay, I kid. That would be an inside joke. "One Fine Day" is a tune that one cannot stop playing... when they're in a GOOD mood is all I'm saying. "Whisper" is an NPR-played well-known classic seen on the previous album, although the production is much more clear on this one. The wonderful eccentricity of "London Bridge" (Freebo on TUBA!) The romance of "You and Me" and wistfulness of "Time Will Fly." Another highlight for me is the powerful yet subtle "Together" all wrapped up tightly with the sentiment of "Here and Now." James truly takes you on a journey. So take a nice drive and pop in this CD, I can't think of anything better.

    Aside from great melody, who else since Cole Porter can write lyrics like the Sun and the Moon or London Bridge . I think Whisper is the classic find on this cd. I'm 83 years old, and I've given this CD to a number of my friends, but only to those who are hip!

    Living in Southern California with all its mariachi bands, I had come to the firm conclusion that there is no place for the tuba in popular music until I heard “London Bridge”. How often do you hear a tune that makes you want to skip down the street? James is “The Competition”. You can’t put it any more simply than that. If you’re sharing a gig with him, you have to have your “A game” ready at the OFFRAMP to the club.His songs are delightful and his performances are dependably deadly; any note that you hear from his guitar in this album will be available at any live show as well. But I really wish that I’d written “Whisper”. It is just seamlessly melancholy, a classic; a song that, once it gains the popularity that it deserves, will be recorded again and again and again and again……………. He is so lucky; how many great writers have never achieved a classic song…………

    With a voice kind of like Frank Sinatra and the guitar savy of Segovia mixed with good ole' pickin' and strummin', James Hurley's The Sun and the Moon is a beautiful CD of soulful songs. I bought it because I heard him play live at Kulaks Woodshed and he was great. I like this CD because it is smooth -- a very smooth CD!!

    Like I said, infectious optimistic pop-lounge music. Well, with some tasty blues tossed into the mix. I must like this, my ipod tells me I play it a lot. Nice sparse arrangements where the song is the star and the capable instrumentation provides the minimum necessary for support. It's music for quiet nights, rainy mornings, hot afternoons, long drives, and sanding drywall.
