Between the years 1999 and 2006, James Noyes actively worked with composers in the New York metropolitan area to commission new works for saxophone. In particular, he felt it was of great importance to raise the profile of the soprano saxophone, which has been an overlooked, even neglected, voice within contemporary classical music. The result was a collection of twelve pieces, written by eleven composers – five of which are recorded here. A thirteenth piece, Consoli’s Sonatina, while written in 1965, was given its first complete performance by Noyes in 2002 and is the sixth work included on the album.
