Album Notes

I have often considered how I could "give back" with my talents and make a tangible difference in the world with my music. I decided to produce "A Sea of Voices," with water-inspired compositions, as a not-for-profit project to benefit the environment. I have also really enjoyed playing jazz concerts in churches over the past few years, a tradition introduced to me by Ira Sullivan. So, I began searching for an environmental group that I could benefit with my CD sales, which would allow me to perform more jazz concerts in churches as part of my touring. Thus, I found the Sunshine State Interfaith Power and Light organization, whose environmental mission is to mobilize faith communities in Florida to care for creation (www.sunshinestateipl.org). Here, I could combine the worlds of diverse faiths and jazz to benefit a common cause that we can all unite behind: care of our planet!

Versatile musicians (with diverse repertoire) show caring for our planet
author: Joe Ross

Article first published as music review on Blogcritics - Of the ten flowing aqueous songs on “A Sea of Voices,” half are originals by double bassist Jamie Ousley. His complete set of water-inspired songs reflect his “love of nature and all things beautiful…” The professor of jazz bass at Miami’s Florida International University put this project together to benefit Sunshine State Interfaith Power and Light, an organization whose environmental mission is to mobilize faith communities in Florida to care for creation (sunshinestateipl.org). Ousley primarily teams with pianist Joe Davidian and percussionist Austin McMahon to present penetrating and inventive arrangements with transcendent underpinnings. Three others contribute on the project: Nanami Morikawa (vocals on “Shenandoah”), Gabriel Saientz (piano on “Alfonsina y el Mar”) and Carlomagno Araya (percussion on “Swallowed in the Sea” and “Rocky Top”). Yes, the latter is the same song as the bluegrass classic, written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, and popularized by The Osborne Brothers. However, Ousley’s grooving jazz rendition sounds nothing like bluegrass. Morikawa also offers some Japanese lyrics for “Shenandoah,” before Ousley’s bowed instrumental break transports us to an enchanting musical riverine habitat full of subtle and soothing resonance. A careful listen shows sophisticated voicings and sensitive interpretations throughout this album. One has to appreciate the versatility of these musicians, the diversity of their repertoire, as well as their desire to care for our planet. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

WOW!

Just listened to A Sea Of Voices. This is a wonderful album that held me from start to finish with phenomenal musicianship, great writing and just a good, clean feeling; a very enjoyable listen. Every song is special in some way but I particularly liked "With You" and "Shenandoah", where Nanami Morikawa was amazing. This one stays in the iPod.
