Jamil Mustafa, a hip hop artist from the Midwest, knows all about woring towards a career in music while living in obscurity.
Without the benefit of approprite venues, consistent radio play, and an established music scene, this Hutchinson, Kansas native has not had the easiest route in getting his music heard.
Despite the odds, Jamil has fored ahead, working on rhymes and beats with his fellow Nomad crew members, performing in and around Kansas, and releasing projects independently.
Approaching his 10th year as an emcee and a spoken word artist, Jamil Mustaf hopes i the near future, music fans around the world will reconize his contribution to the Midwest hip hop scene.
A large step toward Jamil realizing his goal is in the release of his new album entiled "When Poets Shout".
The seventeen track cd, featuring production from Pajamaz of Mosaic Music and appearances from lyricists Moody(Project Elevation), Hadji Al-Amin(Nomads), and Nandez(Nadir), is best described as social activism with a b-boy attitude.
Over Pajamaz' unique musical backdrop blending gritty percussion, warm melodies, and low end bump, Jamil sheds light on his ideas and experiences while tying various songs into a larger theme-- hip hop's opporotunity to inspire and entertain at the same time.
Helping toward these objectives are spoken word artists 30 Spokes and Lamar Ballard, along with vocalist Brent Iverson(Dynasty) and electronica artist Mosys.
Jamil Mustafa is an as of yet unknown emcee, but with this album, an impotant piece for Midwest and worldwide hip hop, hopefully that will all change.

Finally, Midwest hip-hop with talent, depth, AND meaning...
author: Oklahoma State Fan
Hip-hop has its roots in vocal acrobatics over minimalistic soundscapes (although the beats can be as complex as you want them to be, e.g. Afrika Bambaataa), and these are well represented on this disk. One must admit that this music form is to some degree an acquired taste in the context of most popular music... this music form thrives off of rhythm in a world that is melody driven. However, another fundamental aspect of hip-hop is its political implications. Yet again, this disk hits the mark in this category, being packed full of words with meaning and insightfulness, but unlike the acquired taste of the music form, what Jamil has to say is important to everyone, and should have implications for people of many walks of life. One cannot overlook the vocal tapestry woven over the course of this album. Although the method used to weave this art work may not be your favorite genre (and to someone who, like me, who does like hip-hop, the music is fabulous), the beauty and honesty of this work cannot be denied. It's worth sparing eight dollars on....
