Jam-Lab is a jam-based jazz-fusion electric trio out of Kalamazoo and Three Rivers, MI. Jam-Lab plays original music and interpretations of songs by artists including John Scofield, Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, Sting, The Greyboy Allstars, and others. The band features John Austin (6-string electric bass), Jim Carr (electric guitar), and Mike Curtis (electronic and acoustic drums, percussion), each having 15 years or more of live music experience playing everything from funk to jazz and heavy rock to country. Jam Lab melds together these wide musical influences, many of which emerge during a single song, to form its own dynamic groove and unique style that captivates audiences in a wide range of venues.
REVIEW OF GAIN
Simply put, this instrumental jazz-funk-space-rock trio has put together a beautiful collection of music. The hyper-articulate guitar locks in perfectly with the granite rhythm section throughout all 10 tunes. Even when using elements from rock music, it never hits you over the head – though the guitar can get noticeably dirty from time to time. Refreshingly, no one style marks the whole disc and there is a deceptively full sound throughout, despite there only being three members (and few overdubs). There’s a jazz fusion cover of “Back In Black,” and several forays into cerebral math-type passages for the theory inclined. Check out myspace.com/jamlab for a listen. — Ryan Cunningham, RECOIL MAG
Quote:
Jam-Lab has garnered a reputation for
wowing audiences in live performances. And
while the quest for higher learning can be a
slow, methodical process, the band’s quest
for the groove is natural and dynamic.

Review of debut CD:
Fusion trio Jam-Lab’s debut EP is five
tracks of groovin’ instrumental music.
Jim Carr’s guitar skills add a Santanalike
vibe. Opening track “regression” is
the best of the set, slowly building to a
hard-rock finish. This is great music to
chill out to and enjoy; it’s too bad Jam-
Lab couldn’t have extended their play
here with more! - REVUE Editorial Staff
