Album Notes

Jane Hawley is a singer/songwriter/musician now living in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains some forty miles south of Calgary, Alberta. She was born into a musical family in Toronto, Ontario.

After finishing university Jane headed west, traveling through the Prairies and the Northwest Territories playing honky-tonks, folk festivals, songwriter workshops and rodeo dances. Settling in Edmonton Jane recorded her first CD entitled As We Walk On Thin Ice. The CD was released in 1990 and generated eight “Alberta Recording Artist” nominations, three of which she won. Over the next three years Jane toured nonstop; she also did a two-year stint as a member of the infamous Edmonton rockers Jr. Gone Wild. Jane toured the festival circuit extensively playing the Edmonton Folk Festival, North Country Fair, South Country Fair, Yellowknife’s Folk on the Rocks, Inuvik’s Summer Festival, Calgary Folk Festival and more.

Jane has been featured on CBC’s Brave New Waves and Peter Gzowski’s Morningside. Acclaimed movie producer/director Bruce MacDonald used Jane’s song Mama’s Waitin’ in his notable road movie Highway 61. All of this activity led to As We Walk On Thin Ice being picked up for distribution in Canada by Festival Records and in Europe by Taxim Records.

In 1996 Jane released the album Letters to Myself. She went on to play with Calgary band Beautiful Joe, releasing their highly acclaimed CD cover up in 2004 helmed by renowned Nashville producer Brian Ahern. Jane has had the privilege to open for Lyle Lovett, Prairie Oyster, Tom Russell, Ian Tyson, Jann Arden and appeared on the Rita McNeil show.

In 2004 Jane entered the live-theatre world appearing in Theatre Calgary’s musical production of Fire and Stage West’s Covergirl.

2006 saw the release of two recordings featuring Jane Hawley. The first was Sorrow Bound, Hank Williams Re-examined, a 2-CD set featuring Jane and various Calgary artists playing the music of Williams and their own Hank-inspired material.

In July, Jane released her accoustic recording Ordinary Dream. The release coincided with Jane and the Sorrow Bound Band's performance at the Calgary Folk Festival.

Jane is tuning things up in 2006 as she prepares to record with legendary producer Brian Ahern in early 2007.
