\"DON\'T MAKE ME LAUGH\"
Janelle Sadler/ Little Precious Records

By JIM SANTELLA
All About Jazz.com

What stands out on \"Don\'t Make Me Laugh\" is the vibrancy with which Janelle Sadler swings and scats with fluid ease. Articulate and instantly communicative, she\'s a singer who relates to a broad audience. Jazz and popular music hold hands together on this recommended album.

Like a family that hangs out together seven nights a week, Sadler\'s ensemble supports her with intuitive refrains. Even Jimi Hendrix\'s \"Manic Depression\" comes together with a pert and saucy texture. Here, she pefers an organ combo mood that lets the music flow like a healing salve. Robin Swenson, her husband and musical director, ensures that every tune rocks with fiery passion.

Sadler\'s hearty alto voice lets her interpret with feelings alive. She\'s convincing. As a backup singer for Donny Osmond, Natalie Cole, Deneice Williams and The Mamas and The Papas, she\'s demonstrated this warmth time and time again. Now, it\'s her showcase, and what a pleasure the session delivers.

\"Don\'t Make Me Laugh\" simmers with the inner emotions of a ballad conceived in a moment of passion. Sadler brings the song out and pours the feelings onto her audience. These invisible emotional twinges expand far and wide. Mose Allison\'s \"If You Live\" and Swenson\'s \"The Wagon\" bring out the best qualities from all, as Sadler and her piano trio express with the deep feeling found in the blues.

It will put a smile on your face. Don\'t miss it!

JANELLE SADLER CD “DON\'T MAKE ME LAUGH”

TAMPA FLORIDA native JANELLE SADLER has sung backups with many top name acts since her move to Los Angeles ten years ago.
However it was her three year touring experience with NATALIE COLE which helped her to look at her singing in a new way.
\"Observing how diligently Natalie works to reinvent herself in her career and continue to grow as a singer inspired me to step out for myself.\" said JANELLE from her California home.
The result is the elegantly understated jazz album entitled “Don’t Make Me Laugh” which features 2 standards, 4 originals and 4 jazz influenced pop covers.
\"As someone who sang rock, pop and jazz at a young age in the Florida clubs, it was fun to cover JIMI HENDRIX\'S \"MANIC DEPRESSION\" with a groovy swing approach!\" Laughs Janelle. \"I tried to pick songs that remind me of where I came from, as well as where I\'m headed as an artist.\"
JANELLE\'S other album credits include lead vocals for such artists as legendary bassist CHUCK RAINEY and premier session guitarist MICHAEL THOMPSON. She recently sang backups on actor DANIEL BENZALI’s new CD “Benzali” featuring the talents of AL SCHMITT.
Her national television appearances include \'THE TONIGHT SHOW\",\"ROSIE O\'DONNELL SHOW\", and \"THE TODAY SHOW\" to name a few. She even appeared on \"MTV SPRINGBREAK\" playing guitar behind MANDY MOORE.
\"As far as musical influences go, I\'d have to say JONI MITCHELL, ARETHA FRANKLIN, CHAKA KAHN, ELLA, rocker ANN WILSON, Boston’s REBECCA PARRIS.....Anyone who has chops, can tell a soulful story and retain an intimacy with the listener impresses me.\" said Janelle. \"It isn\'t about looks or fashion, or some temporary \"sound\" that\'s popular. It\'s about the story. Will the audience be emotionally transported? That\'s what it\'s all about for me, and that\'s my goal as a singer.\"

I was SOOOOO impressed with this CD. How the instruments are so carefully played and arranged around Janelle's voice... and how Janelle's voice was carefully wrapped around the instruments... oozing with sass and emotion throughout the whole thing - (which is refreshing in todays music scene) - it's as if you can hear her heart when she sings! What a great production from start to finish. To have this as my first real "Jazz" CD to cut my teeth to, it's an absolute pleasure to listen to and I'd say she ROCKS!

Janelle has one of the most versatile voices in music today. She could sing a grocery list and it would sound fantastic. She makes every song her own, and is very comfortable with the music she sings. You will NOT be sorry. I've played it again and again.

This is the CD of a seasoned pro that we need to hear more from in years to come. What an auditory treasure as each listen finds something new and wonderful in the creative and fresh arrangements on standards as well as original tunes. From heartbreaking to soul inspired, Janelle's interpretations and deft abilities are at once realised by the listener, so confidently she floats and soars with a gift for time and pitch many singers today only hope to have. This debut CD invokes the bump-o-meters of thrilldom on so many cuts you just might have to sit down and collect yourself! Watch for this artist to emerge as someone who SETS the standard for jazz vocalists everywhere that have the dream to sing. Inspired, refined, honed by time and experience, Janelle Sadler has it all. I am inspired and moved.

Janelle Sadler's is one of the most awesome voices coming out of such a tiny package. And on DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH she breaks your heart connecting to its sentiment. But it's on the song, JESSE, that all her beautiful pathos leaks right out and does you in. She can do me in anytime!
