Born in Yorkshire, England, Jane attributes her interest in music to her Welsh mother and to the lullabies and Celtic folk songs she heard from an early age on. Through her Serbian father she was exposed to the beauty of Slavonic Church Music, as well as the culturally rich music of the Balkan people. This diverse background engaged her early on to a variety of musical styles and performances and helped instill the passion that she feels for creating music.
Today, Jane is known for her ability to embrace many different musical styles, and for her multi-colored voice and eclectic programming. She has always been a singer, accompanying herself on piano and guitar, graduating with a B.A. in Vocal Performance and continuing to sing in concert settings, coffee houses, and with the highly acclaimed Milwaukee Symphony Chorus. She was staff musician with The Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation from 1997-2000, leading workshops devoted to the concept of music as a powerful healing and transformative tool.
Regarding the creation of her CD project, entitled "After the Storm", Jane writes: "As a survivor of a life-threatening disease, I am well aware of and connected to the challenges, frustrations, fears, and - yes - opportunities that dealing with illness bring to all who endure this journey. My experience is not unique - all people are called upon to survive hardships that take them to the edges of their lives. I have seen the commonalities of fear, isolation, and hopelessness five way to resiliency and resolution, strength and courage, and the heart and spirit to do what must be done. I have witnessed transformations brough about through gazing at starlit nights and listening to songs of hope and love.
Disease comes as a thief - robbing us of our dreams, hopes and futures. How do we call back our spirits? How do we reclaim our souls? For me, music - and especially singing - has helped me to recover my sense of self and experience a whole new world. I have seen the power of a song to bring people together - and back to themselves - touching and opening hearts along the way. Music can heal us. The peace that comes after the storms is worth singing about! May you hear something here that brings you to your own precious voice as you live this symphony called life."
In addition, this project is dedicated to Jane's sister-in-law, Melissa Kegel Verhein, 1962-1997, "whose laughter I still hear, and whose journey with breast cancer inspired and blessed me with this music. Thank you, Melissa."
A portion of the proceeds from each sale of "After The Storm" goes to those organizations actively working to save and heal women's lives affected by breast cancer. Information available upon request.
