ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Soprano Janice Cavalier brings her experience in Opera, Oratorio, Recital, Radio and TV to this CD which presents a diverse, vocally demanding program of classical art songs that express a wide range of styles.

***
Purcell
Music for a While (“Oedipus”)
I am Come to Look All Fast (“The Fairy Queen”)
Thus to a Ripe Consenting Maid (“The Old Bachelor”)
The Queen’s Epicedium (“Elegy on the Death of Queen Mary. “ 1695)
Deprived by death of their Queen the land is full of tears. On the sea and in the countryside every head is bowed. The shepherd in his grief neglects his herd. The wonderful joy of her eyes is extinguished never to return. But, her immovable star shines beyond the heavens.

***
Philidor:
Je vais seulette en mon jardin (‘Sancho Panca”)
I go alone into my garden and adorn myself with lovely flowers. I hear my cute little parrot say, “kiss me,” and I answer him. I feel so fine-yet, something is lacking.
Quand on aime bien (“Le marếchal Ferrant”).
When one loves well, one suffers all the anguish silently. One cherishes the chains. But, my constant soul would surely be more content if I could but see my loved one.

Gaeaux:
Dieu du Bonheur (“Le Trompeur trompế”)
God of happiness, ruler of all hearts! The tender blossom bathed by the tears of dawn is pleasing to our eyes. The only beautiful days in life are those you embellish because of our love for us.

Bert Lucarelli, Assisting Artist
***
Beethoven:
Ah, perfido!
Oh, unfaithful one! You leave me like this? If there is justice in heaven, wherever you go, there will follow my vengeance. Ah no. I do not mean that. My love remains unchanged. Do not leave me or I will die. Am I not worthy of pity?
***
Wolf
Auch kleine Dinge
Even little things can delight us. Think how we adorn ourselves with pearls, so costly yet so small. Consider the rose. How small, yet how fragrant!

Begegnung
What a storm last night! A lovely girl, her face aglow comes down the street and encounters the handsome lad who shares her secret of the night before. She is embarrassed by his questions and rustles quickly around the corner as he stands transfixed, dreaming of her sweet kisses.

Ach, des Knaben Augen
The little boy’s eyes so beautiful and clear look into mine, and something shines from them that wins my heart completely

Zitronenfalter im April
Cruel April sun! You awaken me too soon. I need the tender foood of May to live. Perhaps a loving maid will offer me a d rop of honey from her rosy lips. If not, then May will never see this beautiful yellow butterfly.

Wehe der, die mir verstrickte
Woe to her who stole my first love. She stole his heart even as he was carrying a curl from my locks. Woe to her!
***
R. Straus:
Wiegenlied
Dream my sweet, of the heavens bringing flowers. Dream of the day the flower unfolded and your soul opened itself to the world. Dream of the still, holy night when the flower of his love made this world my heaven.

Schlechtes Wetter
What terrible weather! I sit looking out the window and see a small women with a lantern making her way home. I think she has bought everything to make a cake for her darling daughter who sits snuggled in the armchair at home, golden curls framing her sweet face.

Ach Lieb, ich muss nun scheiden
Ah love, I must leave you. The alder trees and the willows are weeping. So often they saw us together that seeing one without the other is more than they can understand. If they weep, how much greater must be our pain?

Ich liebe Dich
Four noble steeds draw our carriage. All the world is ours! But, should you wander forsaken, I will go with you, should your silver coffin stand at the alter, let them bring me to the bier, should you die in affliction. I will draw the dagger from its sheath and follow you in death.

Griffes
Four Impression
(Oscar Wilde)
1. Le Jardin
2. Impression du martin
3. La mer
4. Le reveillon
(First New York Performance)
