Amazing freshman effort
author: Stephen Joseph
Amazing vocals and piano (ala the super talented Janie Oliver). Lyrics that are thought provocing enough to keep you interested (imagine that, in this day and age!). Great production (ala the outstanding Rob Cross). Amazing musicianship by such great as Steve Robertson, Ezra Gold and others. Can it get any better?
Just a quick review to touch on some highlights:
The CD opens with the acoustic-based "Dive Into You". A tune that would make the premiere Nashville songwriters on the open-mic night circuit stand up and take notice. With it's layed-back flare, it's Americana enough to cross the ever blurring line between country and pop.
The tongue-in-cheek "Love Song" seems to somehow mock the sappy creation of the song's title while simultaneously reeling you into it's infectious beat, R&B/Motown arrangement and somehow it's "love song themed" message.
"The Memories". The cool samples. The trip-hop beats. The soaring vocals. The the horn sections. The groove. The addiction to this CD is growing!
Next up is "The Author", which I'd say is the high point of the CD. The arrangement is superb. The vocals shine through just enough to let you groove on the melodic changes, however, I would have allowed this one to be a little more aggressive in it's beat and bass line. Just my opinion. The witty lyrics are a true bonus on this one as well.
From the electronic to the acoustic once more with "Carries Song". A beautiful song that reminds me of one of my favorite songs, Shawn Colvin's version of "In The Bleak Mid-Winter". This song does a great job of showcasing the raw talent of Janie's vocal craftings. The cello is a nice addition to this collection of songs as well.
Finally, we end the Janie Oliver voyage with the stunning, harmonious "Music". This song, as with the whole project, isn't exactly what you think it is. Just wait for the change around 2:15 and see for yourself. To quote from the song, Whether if I dance/sit off the stage/there's still Music. That may be true, Ms. Oliver, but here's hoping that doesn't happen anytime soon.
Bottom line: this CD is an amazing freshman effort from one of the best new voices I heard in a long time and it's produced by one of the most interesting and creative producers I've heard as well. Seriously people, buy it and support good music. Don't let real talent go unnoticed. Yes "real" meaning they write, play, produce, record, arrange this stuff by themselves with little or no budget. Support real talent, not what you are force fed by Clear Channel. While your at it, google Weather Pending and hear the fresh new sounds of Janie's new band with Rob Cross and Brian Holtzman. You won't be disappointed.
