ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Every song is a gem on the six-song Joy + Pain. It has a rougher, more minimal sound than Jan's first CD, Remember Me, which included a choir, a virtual and real orchestra. On Joy + Pain, the vocals are grungier, more up front. "Bang the Drum" is a raucous romp about the thrill of invading other countries. "Break Free" is a danceable rocker about frustration. The rhythm on "Joy" is based on Mississippi fife & drum rhythms; but the song also has a jig-feel to it. "You Are My Pain" was inspired by Joseph Campbell's writings on love - that love is a pain. "Sunrise" is an inspiring morning prayer. And last but certainly not least is a cover of Peter Gabriel's lovely "In Your Eyes".
