ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Jann Klose's new album, REVERIE, covers as much musical, sonic and emotional ground as Jann has himself. Now living in the Bronx, New York, one of the most culturally diverse communities on earth, he has lived in distinctively unique parts of the planet.

Born in Mannheim, Germany, his family relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, when he was less than a year old. “Eastern Africa was full of impressions. Because of my parents' interest in travel, I experienced African culture first-hand at a very young age. Seeing and hearing African performers and their natural gift for song and dance had a strong impact on me.” A few years later, Jann and his family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, “I remember my father taking us to a musical that I loved, called ‘The Warrior,' starring the late Margaret Singana, who was very popular at that time in South Africa.”

For Jann, coming of age involved learning to understand human struggle in direct relationship to Africa and her people; shortly after Jann returned to Germany, Apartheid crumbled in South Africa. At age 16, Jann was on the move again, this time to Cleveland, Ohio, where he attended high school as an exchange student and immersed himself in Cleveland's burgeoning music scene.

He returned to Germany, to fulfill mandatory civil service, and then relocated to North East Ohio, where he studied voice with Emmy winner David Gooding, sang in the Cleveland Opera Chorus, and released two CDs on local label G21 Records.

In 2000, Jann moved to New York City, "After living in so many places, I felt like I came home to the world from the moment I arrived." NYC offers a smorgasbord of arts, and Jann responded by going to every singing and acting audition he could attend. Within a few months, he found work in the cast of the Broadway national touring company of JEKYLL & HYDE, and thereafter in the cast of the European tour of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.

Upon his return to the New York City pavements, he committed himself to his career as a singer/songwriter, recording BLACK BOX, a 2003 EP, which net him favorable reviews and career step-ups in touring. In 2005, Jann performed his music in MOONLIGHT INTERIOR, a movement theatre production directed by Yo-el Cassell, that had a brief, sold-out Off-Broadway run.

Jann and his band continued touring, playing over 250 shows in 10 U.S. States as well as Germany; licensing songs from BLACK BOX to the movie, DEAD BROKE, on Warner Bros Home DVD; compilation discs in overseas markets: PRAMBORS HITS 3 in Indonesia; and on car maker SAAB's 60th anniversary CD in France.

After a 2005 digital release, LIVE AT THE BITTER END, NYC, Jann focused on recording a new full-length album. In addition to using monies collected from performance and licensing fees, he asked fans for a little help, “Using PBS as an example, I gave out autographed CDs and held private concerts for donors.”

Music industry folks also believed in Jann's talent. Rob Grenoble, who runs premiere recording studio Water Music in Hoboken, NJ, “made it work” financially and time-wise in scheduling recording dates between May and August 2007. Producer Stewart Lerman (The Roches, Loudon Wainwright III, Dar Williams, and films THE AVIATOR and THE LIFE AQUATIC) produced and mixed “Hold Me Down,” “Beautiful Dream,” “Give in to This Life,” and mixed “Doing Time” on REVERIE.

Both Lerman and Grenoble had enough faith in Jann's discipline and musical abilities to encourage him to produce much of the album himself. Jann tapped Water Music engineer James Frazee to run the board, mix, and offer critical feedback. Dominick Maita (Fall Out Boy, Bryan Ferry, Plain White T's) mastered the album.

Jann collaborated extensively with Lerman and his band mates Chris Marolf (upright bass), Lars Potteiger (keys, accordion), Patrick Carmichael (drums) and Leah Potteiger (violin) on arrangements. Additional musicians on the album include: Pedro da Silva (Portuguese guitar), Megan Marolf (oboe), Ryan Scott (electric guitar), Dan Brantigan (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Doug Hinrichs (percussion).

Jann continues to grow as an artist. “Last year I wrote a piece for tenor and baritone for my sister's wedding. Art is about appreciating other people's sense of self-expression; this observation inspires me to let my own imagination run free.”

Rick Davies

Best new artist I've heard in decades
When good friend and music publicist Anne Leighton sent me a copy of Jann's latest project, she simply said something like "you've got to hear this, Rick". I really didn't know what to expect, but there was something in the way she spoke that hinted at something unusual, something special...and since Anne's credibility in musical projects is without question (publicist for Jethro Tull, Grand Funk, to name just two) I was intrigued.

I knew I was probably in for a pleasant surprise.

On my first listen to Reverie, I was immediately drawn into the fresh melodic quality of Jann's music. I was immediately struck by the album's cohesive sound, even in the face of all the stylistic variance. There are 12 songs on this collection, ranging from pop ballads and light rock tunes to very sparse, simply arranged gems. There is actually a kind of quiet quality to the overall CD that drew me in right away...and yet, the music is filled with energy, color and light. Happily, Jann is able to spin that unusual quality into this collection, without resorting to the usual sugar-and-formula that most radio-friendly pop artists employ today. This album evokes the best of the Beatles, U2, or Seales and Crofts. And yet, such comparisons actually fall short, because this CD is filled with totally unique, original music from a fresh new artist. The comparisons come probably more because of the presentation-this album is well recorded and mastered...and also features a host of excellent musicians who turn in top tier performances. I listened for weak or ill-produced glitches, and found none.

In addition to the songwriting on Reverie, Jann Klose has a voice and sensibility that just might, if we let him, completely re-define the neo-folk/pop genre...and it has been a precious long time since I've heard a new artist who captivated my tired ears so.

It is obvious that Jann drinks from the same well as the master tunesmiths of old. If any of us can get him to actually tell us where that well is, we'd all be the better for it.

Jann Klose's Reverie
Jann Klose has give us a real treat in his new album, "Reverie". The sounds - at times ethereal - are refreshing among today's music scene. As I listened, my mind drifted back to hearing my aunt's Chuck Girard album/s; some similarities were absolutely uncanny as I was translated into a world though similar to our own, yet brimming with lilting, intense spiritual dimensions. Any individual that longs for those moments from the "days of yore", coupled with a wide range of instrumental creativity, needs to avail himself/herself of this eucharistic offering. Without a doubt, he/she will be transported into a place of contemplation, joy and repose. Run to the altar and partake!

A beautiful journey
Jann Klose's new album is beautiful, profound, and enriching in every way. His vocal gifts are golden and the composition and new arrangements are priceless, thank you!!! I am actually listening it to it now as I write and prepare my day. The arrangement of Question of the Heart is moving. Chris Marolf did a beautiful job with the Cello arrangement. I also was moved by Ithaca, it reminded me of Charles Ives with his New England Pieces and it was also very cinematic in its imagery. Lars Potteiger's playing on The Beginning is special as well. Each musician is so beautifully showcased. Lars' lucid playing, Patrick Carmichael's exuberant and focused percussion, Chris' beautifully nuanced tone and of course all of the friends who contributed. On top of it, Jann's guitar playing and vocal smoothness leads the way... goodness there are so many great moments I can go on and on. The presentation and cover design is just perfect and I love the title, REVERIE. After hearing it I totally got it. It’s very personal, moving and enriching.

Jann's REVERIE is Real!
Honestly, if you want to hear some real feeling, great sounding, good grooving music, buy this albumn. Every song has this unique sound that makes me anticipate the next track, which then is equally as good if not better. I bought one for all my friends and family for Christmas who enjoy good music and I only hear good things from them too. Jann's refreshing sound and strong voice gives me great inspiration, and what moving lyrics...wow!

Jann Klose's Reverie
Having listened to this album several times since it came out, I’ve found that there is more feeling in each track every time I hit “Play.” Such raw emotion can strike a listener’s inner poet and relate him/her to the artist’s mood – what was being felt while composing the music & lyrics.
This album is an extraordinary collaboration of instruments that compliment each other with each note. A sample of up-beat & mellow tunes that are sure to please the ears of the eclectic listener. A true inspiration!

Jann Klose lässt in seinem neuen Album „Reverie“ mal wieder alle Herzen höher schlagen. Seine schöne, kraftvolle und ausdrucksstarke Stimme geht dem Zuhörer einfach unter die Haut. Gänsehaut garantiert!
Das Album ist eine gute Mischung. Mal etwas ruhigere Lieder zum entspannen und dann wieder welche, die etwas schneller sind. Diese bunte Mischung macht die CD sehr sympathisch. Einfach jedes Lied ist auf seine Weise super gelungen und es macht einfach Spaß zu zuhören. Klasse!
Besonders gefallen mir „beautiful dream“ , „hold me down“ und „watching you go“.

Jann's Daydreams
A more soothing and full voice than your every day pop or rock vocalist, with world beats and a throw of Americana jazz, Jann Klose is a sweet ember for the soul, warming without burning, and fulfilling within us a sense of humanity through his words, sound, and vocals. He brings who he is to us, and in this case, that is a very good thing.

Jann Klose's new one, Reverie
My mood picks my music, and today it's a beautiful weather day here in so. GA, so Jann Klose is as close to a convertible going to the beach without depending on Beach Boys day as I've found in a while. Open door, open window music that refreshes, but perhaps not Charges. You have to come into the game with a positive attitude already and Jann will meet you halfway.

He wrote all the songs and has an attention grabbing, different voice that still sounds familiar. Somewhere between Jack Johnson and Paul McCartney, with a touch from each songwriter's composition skill as well.

Recommended listening. First 3 songs are worth the price of the cd.

Jann Klose's Reverie
Jann Klose’s new album, Reverie, is a musical masterpiece with an ensemble of easy-listening sounds that invites the listener to explore their own imagination. The instrumental collaboration for Reverie includes everything from an upright bass, an accordion, drums, violin, oboe, trumpet, and a Portuguese guitar, making Jann’s music truly unique.

Born in Mannheim, Germany, his family relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, when he was less than a year old. A few years later, Jann and his family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa. Seeing and hearing African performers express their art of song and dance had an impact on Jann, inspiring him, while cultivating his love for music.

Integrating Jann’s hypnotic voice with lush easy-listening sounds makes Reverie a harmonious success. Songs such as “Beautiful Dreams”, “Hold Me Down”, “All These Rivers” and “Remember Your Name” will resonate in the deepest recesses of the listener’s mind, thus creating a mystical experience of melodious pleasure. Reverie is one beautiful dream you may not want to wake up from.
