A rare thing...

At the musical core of the group are the strong, genetically aligned voices of siblings Jake and Sarah Pappas. Expanding out, the technical musicianship of the group, as well as their tact, is well beyond what their years would suggest. Arrangements and production are first-rate. The lyrics breathe new life into old themes, or approach new territory with intelligence, wit, and a unique narrative perspective and voice.
The songs themselves and their arrangements defy categories, as much good music does. But these are not Post-modern jig-saw puzzles, with a Hot Jazz piece here and a Bluegrass piece inserted there. Try to boil the songs in this EP down to their individual analogs and antecedents, and you’ll end up with an empty pot and a room full of steam. Instead of sticking to a genre, the music and lyrics adhere each to the other, and grow confidently and organically into unexpected places -- all texture and detail, wonderful harmonies and silences: no slickness, clichés or shortcuts.

Eclectic in the Ears

Janu and the Whalesharks are constantly creating catchy tunes that are unlike anything heard by the common eardrum. I've had the pleasure of witnessing their growth and progression as recording artists and performing musicians. Their live show is incredible as it contains a mixture of humor, acoustics, harmonies, and a wide variety of instruments that many have never laid eyes on. All in all, Janu & the Whalesharks are currently a young underground, traveling band playing mostly local shows in southern California but not for long. Catch a gig while you can.
