MARTIN NEWELL, legendary founder of the CLEANERS FROM VENUS recorded his masterpiece pop album THE GREATEST LIVING ENGLISHMAN with the help of XTC-genius ANDY PARTRIDGE in 1993. A year later his then English label "Humbug" got an all-star band together (incl. DAVE GREGORY/ex-XTC and CPT. "WOT" SENSIBLE) to promote this pop milestone in France and Japan. You can hear most of the GLE songs, some in impressive rock/psychedelic versions, some almost note-by-note as on the album. The CLEANERS were in top form and threw in some old CLEANERS classics as well as some acoustic trax along with the HOLLIES´ "Bus Stop" as an encore.
A great early version of "She Rings the Changes" ends this "time document". The packaging by the way: a zip wallet incl. a tour diary, 2 original live-photographs and a laminated map of Japan. With a little luck you can get a highly limited copy AUTOGRAPHED by Martin Newell - so hurry and don´t miss this "collector´s item!"

Greatest Live Living Englishman
author: diskojoe
This is a rare example of live Martin Newell, recorded far away from his beloved Wivenhoe in Osaka, Japan in 1994. The majority of the songs are from his Greatest Living Englishman solo album, which came out a year prior to this live set, which also include covers of the Hollies & Joe Brown. The Cleaners from Venus in this CD include Capt. Sensible (Damned) & Dave Gregory (XTC). A delighful addition to the Newell pop cannon, in a rather unique package.
